I have thought about adding shielding to spacecraft for reasons such as this.

@Robert_Brandt @nyrath I am glad to read that article acknowledging the problems of having several-Tesla fields around astronauts and sensitive equipment.

May journalists also learn to account for the concept of a gyroradius.

@michael_w_busch @nyrath I am wondering if the field could pulse, or vary to reduce the effect. Similar to how reactive armor works.

@Robert_Brandt @nyrath Please do not put rapidly varying high-intensity magnet fields across the space habitat.

That would induce currents in everything conductive - including the astronauts' longer nerves. I am told that the twitching and magnetophosphene visual disturbances are not pleasant.

@michael_w_busch @nyrath One design I had there was a metal cloth, similar to the weave in the composite skin of aircraft to ground out that effect in the cabin.

@Robert_Brandt @nyrath A Faraday mesh blocking magnetic fields from getting through is an option - but if the field strength outside is too high, the induced currents in the mesh will cause inconvenient amounts of heating.

(As the Ars Technica piece talks about for the current loops in the field generator itself.)

@michael_w_busch @nyrath The whipple on front was composed of an ice core as a heat dump, with radiator petals unfolding, the ship type earned the nickname a "daisy".
