Toot

Honestly it feels like a lot of the positive reactions to the bridging thing are people just being in denial about wanting to make a Bluesky account. You don't need to have your access routed through a kludgy series of digital adapters that unethically pulls in everyone on both sides. Fediverse use doesn't inherently have to be some grand position against any and all corporate social media, if you want an account just make one. You're free.

And yes, I did say "both sides" there. Fediverse users are more likely to care for obvious reasons, but bridging is a violation of consent of Bluesky users as well. (And some of them might care a fair bit - let's not forget that it was invitation-only until very recently!) Someone on Bsky might not want to be followable from the Fediverse because they think it's just preachy hippies, and however misinformed that opinion might be, they shouldn't be forced into bridging any more than we should.

An addendum now that Bluesky appears properly ascendant: it is not the same as Twitter, even pre-Musk. It's on a trajectory to become so, but right now it isn't.

If you made the painful decision to leave behind friends on Twitter because of a principled stance against it, seeing all those friends moving to Bluesky and wanting to join them is deeply understandable, as is the desire to not want to leave your new home here, as well as the desire to not juggle multiple social media accounts.

It's important to acknowledge that these feelings are valid, a result of having our social connections be so reliant on corporate mismanagement and other fuckery.

But asserting that there must be a way to use tech to satisfy all those desires at once is magical thinking. The world has changed, and that is painful. There are ways to lessen the pain and to get as close to what you want as possible. But bulldozing user consent only leads to everything becoming more like Twitter.

And that's very, very bad. Because it's now abundantly clear that Twitter-esque social media are not a good way to maintain lasting communities, even if they're non-corporate like Fedi services are. They have a place, but we need to be focusing on a return to things like community forums that foster interactions other than a spaghetti bowl of character-limited conversation threads. Everyone who was on the internet before Twitter knows this instinctively. We can't go back, but we can rebuild.

@hornedking I'm sorta like "Treat bluesky like a less fucky grindr/scruff/etc."

A place more designed to extract money from you while you drink and look at tiddies... not a place to make friends... but if you DO find a potential friend there for the love of all the things you hold dear exchange numbers and find ways to contact them OUTSIDE of the digital tiddy bar and keep that connection going while sober and out in the light of the sun, aka, God's Flashlight.

@hornedking And that is also a VERY good litmus test for whether the stripper/hooker/drag-artist actually likes you: Are they willing to hang out with you for Brunch sometimes.
