This is a very timely event because this afternoon, the European Parliament and Council (member state govts) will negotiate on the EU's #AIAct, with facial recognition and biometric mass surveillance major topics. But so far, EU governments have been unwilling to listen to human rights experts.
As digital human rights advocates, we urge the EU to ban all public biometric surveillance systems, emotion recognition, and biometric categorisation, and to make biometric ID high risk.

This is the long-running demand of 80+ NGOs and 250k people in the ReclaimYourFace movement. It has also been echoed by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the EDPS, and the European networks of national equality and human rights bodies.
Anything short of this will mean that the #AIAct fails human rights.
