Toot

Written by Nebucatnetzer on 2023-11-05 at 12:41

I recently received my pair of Heavys #headphones. While I don’t like them overall they made realize that I would like to have a good pair of over-ear headphones again.

I’m now looking for a replacement for my #Shure SHR940 which I absolutely love sound wise but are really uncomfortable and have really bad build quality.

Current contenders are Sennheiser HD600, Hifiman Sundara and Shure 840A.

Does someone have other recommendations or insights?

@nebucatnetzer all three of those are great brands. I love my #audiophile quality #hifiman #sundara. They are large but if you have gigantic ears they are large circles not ovals or rectangles so they will not fit everyone equally.

@fajjie Large headphones would be great. I have a few piercings in my ear which often touch the earcups and start to hurt after a few hours.

Have you listened to Metal on the Sundaras?

@nebucatnetzer I just measured the inside diameter as 2.25" so if your piercings dangle it would probably hit them. I've listened to everything including but not focused on metal. Guitars shred and crisp. Response feels pretty darned flat. Bass is not emphasized like metal could benefit from, but I like the flatness. The original mix track of Electric Dream by Mord Fustang: heavy, well defined bass. Master of Puppets and some other metal is missing that big doom boom. Gimme a track and I can comparison listen for you vs my heavier weight speakers. Dying Wish's Symptoms of Survival is more satisfying than classic metal, with some better bass balance and definition. But it's still flat not overpowering. Foreign Hands Conditioned for a Head on Collision has bass overshadowing the treble. Hope that helps.

@fajjie I reckon that should be large enough :).

Yeah better flat bass than bloated bass.

The SRH940 don’t have much bass either but the details are sooo nice.

This is my usual test playlist.

@nebucatnetzer I'm too tired to do serious comparative listening tonight, and it might be me or it might be the recording but they sound a little cluttered. Iron by Ensiferum and To Hell and Back by Sabaton both sound good but I will check back tomorrow, or if I'm busy, the next day.

@fajjie No reason to rush :). They might not be perfectly mastered but I know them very well that’s why I chose them.

@fajjie I was able to test the Sundara today at my favorite store for headphones K55 in Zürich.

I compared them to the Shure SRH840A as well and the Sundara were better in every way.

Only downside was that I had to buy an additional DAC because the Apple dongle wasn’t powerful enough.

He didn’t have the Sennheiser HD600 but the Sundara was working perfectly so I don’t feel bad for not being able to compare to more headphones.

@nebucatnetzer awesome! Welcome to the Sundara club. =) What dac did you get? In Tidal on Windows there's an exclusive mode ("more options...") which sends the 44.4k pcm data directly to the DAC without involving the OS volume control or mixer (e.g. no system beeps or other applications can be heard). This clears up the signal tremendously for me.

@fajjie Nothing special from what I can tell but it works for my needs, the Shanling UA1 Plus.

Sounds like a great option however I don’t use Tidal or Windows, I use either my Plexamp for my FLAC files or Apple Music (mostly because I can get it cheap through the family subscription).

@nebucatnetzer I replaced my CDs and plex server's FLACs with Tidal - I spend more time listening and less managing media. Downside is I am much less album focused when streaming vs CDs. It took me a while, but now I've drunk the cool-aid.

I noticed you work with UNIX/Linux, python, and ansible which total about 90% of my technical work. Any favorite ansible resources, like especially a style guide?

@fajjie Yeah the albums are a problem for me with streaming. The number one feature I like in Plexamp is the "Random Album Radio", it's such a great way to rediscover music in your collection.

The good thing is you can manage your music while listening to music ;), jokes aside I just like to own the music that is important to me. However the largest time sink is to discover new music on Bandcamp etc.

@fajjie Hm not really.

The Ansible linter helped me a lot and we run it on the strictest setting.

Besides that I just follow the manual now.

Before that was the book by Jeff Geerling (@geerlingguy) of course.

However there was a lot of new stuff over the years which I didn't fully read up on.

I mainly still use it like with version 2.9 + FQCN.
