I don’t know if I will ever stop getting annoyed when asked what my “pronouns” are when people mean what my gender is, because the conflation of the two is yet another way in which a subset of humanity that exclusively speaks English seeks to direct global socio-political discourse.

Learn another language or two, please.

Third-person pronouns are gender neutral in Hindi, for example, and you tell gender by verb conjugation.

It would have been my parents’ 41st wedding anniversary today. I suppose it still is, even though my father passed away over 12 years ago.

Took mum out to a local (cheap, working-class) restaurant that dad loved and we ate pav bhaji (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pav_bhaji), one of my father’s favourite dishes there.

Thinking of you, old man.

Caught some kind of cold at the wedding I just attended. Who could have predicted this might happen?

Everyone. Everyone could have predicted it. I should’ve been more careful.

I hope I recover before I travel back to the UK in two days.

There are people commenting on Hacker News who cannot comprehend that kids can be (and know they are) transgender.

I have known to some extent since I was maybe five or six. I was suicidally/clinically depressed for most of my life since I was 12. Starting gender-affirming hormone therapy at 36 was long overdue and may have saved my life. Finding myself depression-free after 25 years has been amazing.

I know I am but another anecdatum, but Fuck This Noise.

« I worry that my existence, that my living in joy, in a state of grace, is “too woke” to be worth employing. I’m certain he wouldn’t be rude to my face, but he might quietly discriminate against me, say no thanks. He might not even think of it as discrimination, only that I don’t have what it takes. Whatever that means. »

Such a heartbreakingly beautiful piece by @phillmv. And one I relate to in many ways.

One of the things I absolutely love about being in India is the many languages I hear in my family (even if I don’t speak them all).

Just today:

– Kannada ✅

– Tulu ❌

– English ✅

– Marathi ✅

– Hindi ✅

– Telugu ❌

– Tamil ❌

Sometimes you’ll hear multiple languages in the same conversation between two people.

My Kindle Paperwhite seems to have died after nearly 13 years of service, so I installed #KOReader on my #reMarkable and it works like a treat for reading my ebooks! (Soooo much better than the default feature.) And connecting it to #Calibre makes ebook management much easier than having to use the USB-based web interface on the reMarkable.

So, mum’s been struggling to gender me correctly in English (force of habit?), but not in Sanskrit, apparently! According to my brother, she referred to me as her daughter and used female language when talking about me to her brother yesterday. :)

Webdev question:

Is it possible to pass a parameter to a URL that change the attribute of a tag? (I don’t even know if my question makes sense.)

Essentially, I want to link to my “Current status” tag, but want the tag to be expanded when I link to it:

What an infuriating article. Please read it and weep for #India.

(Also implies everyone who works for L&T is a married man.)

Went to see my mum’s mum’s brother (in India we often refer to our grandparents’ siblings and their spouses as we would our grandparents).

Grandpa [curious in a good way]: “So how does the change feel?”

Me: “Good, it feels good.”

Grandma [dropping what she’s doing to poke her head around the corner]: “But are you happy?”

Me: “Yes, I am. Very happy.”

Grandma: “Good! That’s all that matters.”

(Genuinely surprised by how well family has taken the news of my transition.)

My web host migrated from cPanel to some other system that didn’t have the ability to install MediaWiki natively a few years ago, meaning I lost the ability to update my installed MediaWiki instance from the backend (could still add content), and now they’ve switched back to cPanel, but of course the system doesn’t recognise the old MediaWiki instance, so I have to re-create it. Wish I knew how! Lots of reading, tinkering and crossing fingers ahead.
