OpenAI Furious DeepSeek Might Have Stolen All the Data OpenAI Stole From Us
«Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahhahahahahahahahahahahaha. It is, as many have already pointed out, incredibly ironic that OpenAI, a company that has been obtaining large amounts of data from all of humankind largely in an “unauthorized manner,” and, in some cases, in violation of the terms of service of those from whom they have been taking from, is now complaining about the very practices by which it has built its company.»

That was clearly to be expected, but it's nonetheless such comedy gold. :1000:
thanks @404mediaco 🙃

Amazon to close Quebec facilities, insists it's not because of new union
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/amazon-warehouse-closures-quebec-1.7438078
«Amazon announced on Wednesday it will shutter its facilities in Quebec in the coming weeks and cut nearly 2,000 jobs, 1,700 of which are permanent positions. [...] In Quebec [...] labour law would have obliged the two parties to negotiate a collective agreement and could have imposed arbitration on them.
"Amazon was probably confronted with that imminent arbitration demand for a first collective agreement and wouldn't have had a choice but to conclude a collective agreement" [...]»

No billionnaires at FOSDEM by @how
"If Jack Dorsey would donate $250 million to free software every year, certainly that would make a valuable recognition of his debt to the Ruby language and all the free software that he made a fortune on. But would it really compensate for all the assholiness Drew describes in this article? I think not. Billionaire money, although certainly long due for redistribution, should not be a way of passage downwards through the glass ceiling. They can look down upon us all they want, they’ll never be part of us, because what makes us, us, is not something that can be bought."

US$ 30 million to reinvent the wheel by @manualdousuario
"[...]The Free Our Feeds website is weird. There are no documents or anything that resembles something official. There are photos of some people, a manifesto, and a Q&A section with vague promises and superficial information. [...] We already have a billionaire-proof social media. One that, on the same day Free Our Feeds appeared passing the hat to do who knows what within Bluesky, took a concrete step to consolidate its shield against capital by announcing a new governance structure, also non-profit [...]"

One of the most critically acclaimed and popular video game released last year, was not a AAA 100GB download multi billion IP franchise clusterfuck requiring 64GB of RAM and latest CPU and GPU, but a 30MB software that can run on a 1GHz CPU with 1GB RAM. For some I'm sure it's already bloated (you know who you are :) but hey...
Also: the author "believed that some puzzles would take 10 years to solve and so constructed the game to be as widely compatible as possible, in the hope that future computers would still be able to easily run it."

The Ghosts in the Machine : Spotify’s plot against musicians
by Liz Pelly
"A model in which the imperative is simply to keep listeners around, whether they’re paying attention or not, distorts our very understanding of music’s purpose. This treatment of music as nothing but background sounds—as interchangeable tracks of generic, vibe-tagged playlist fodder—is at the heart of how music has been devalued in the streaming era. It is in the financial interest of streaming services to discourage a critical audio culture among users, to continue eroding connections between artists and listeners, so as to more easily slip discounted stock music through the cracks, improving their profit margins in the process. It’s not hard to imagine a future in which the continued fraying of these connections erodes the role of the artist altogether, laying the groundwork for users to accept music made using generative-AI software."

A Case for Feminism in Programming Language Design (2024)
Felienne Hermans, Ari Schlesinger
"Two critical and interrelated questions regarding the design and study of programming languages are: 1) What does it mean to design a programming language? and 2) Why does minimal demographic diversity persist in the programming language community? In this paper, we present feminism as a philosophical lens for analyzing the programming languages field in order to help us understand and answer the motivating questions above. By using a feminist lens, we are able to explore how the dominant intellectual and cultural norms have both shaped and constrained programming languages."

Repurposing Chromebooks: a general method.
A bit more than a year and a half ago, I bought around 10 cheap Chromebooks to better understand how they can be turned back into regular PCs. Here are the notes I took. I just wanted to remember the overall idea and not a detailed list of step-by-step instructions, as it differs from each model. Basically, I just quickly documented the installation pattern, so I can do it again next time, or teach others to do it.

Maybe this can be useful for others, who are looking for a rough TL;DR process, or are contemplating the idea to do the same and would like an overview of the different main steps.

Neither Elon Musk Nor Anybody Else Will Ever Colonize Mars (2024) - Albert Burneko
«This ordering of priorities, in which the sacrosanct goal is to extend "the probable lifespan of consciousness" and space colonization the means, is above all else a monstrous permission structure for this outspoken bigot's vile social ideas, a kind of reductio ad absurdum for what's been doing business as "effective altruism" for a while now. The fantasy—and it is a fantasy—isn't one of space travel and exploration and some bright Star Trek future for humanity, but one of winnowing and eugenics, of cold actuarial lifeboat logic, of ever greater reallocation from the dwindling many to the thriving few. That's the world as Elon Musk and his cohort want it; Mars colonization is just a pretext.»

TRACES OF POWER - S02E01
FREE EVENT
Sept 26 2024 16:00—18:00
Blaak entrance at WdKA
Blaak 10, 3011 TA Rotterdam
There is currently a lot of enthusiasm about the use of AI in art and design. Generative media is nothing new, and today's AI tools could be seen in the direct lineage of creative algorithmic techniques used since the eighties. Is it really the same though? Can we pause the prompting hype for a sec and discuss a bit what's going on?During the last episode of TOP, we deep dived into the data centre industrial complex. This time, we will discuss an important application of such computational infrastructure: AI, and we are particularly interested into the one that's promising security and creativity at any cost— environmental, social, democratic, and cultural.
To navigate this mess, we have the pleasure to welcome @titipi @dasha and @sarahghp to offer some perspectives and converse with us.

Why no one wanted to buy the Green Shipping Fuel
"Many shipping companies see e-methanol - made from hydrogen and carbon dioxide - as the most promising future clean fuel. But it appears they do not want to buy it: energy company Ørsted canceled plans for an e-methanol production facility due to a lack of offtake agreements. A weakened EU regulation has likely contributed to the difficulty of selling green shipping fuels."
