Much of the decline in the quality and informed-ness of US American thought can be attributed to how Google consumed the newspapers content, and thus, their advertising base, without compensation.

It looked for a while that this could happen to the entertainment industry due to file sharing, but they turned this around with scorched earth legal campaigns and messaging plus loss-leadering streaming without ads at first.

The newspaper industry didn't protect its content and it is 90% dead now.
