What we need is a collectively evolving joint attitude towards what's happening around and afar from us. Authoritarian states are often prepared for oppositional actions, they actually need it to establish their power. Evasion is often better short term and then choosing a time and place of attack when circumstances align. Being in constant "defense" and fight back is too exhausting and untenable. Whereas an enjoyable collectively evolving attitude sustains many future moves ....

Nobody asked for it but here we are. All these "what would you have done in earlier times when facing a fascist shift around you?" ... are suddenly not theoretical questions about a past long gone ... Already the pandemic gave a taste of when our "screens" fail to keep what's happening on them from leaking into bodily experienced realities. It matters what we follow and and how we interact with through our screens. But it's bodily realities that actually matter in the end. Take care.

Turns out that computing power does translate to political power. See inauguration pictures of tech billionaires and political office holders. The old "we come from cyberspace, your ruling does not apply to us" stance aged badly or needs to be followed up, reworked. Computing is political. Which networks and algorithms are at play and who runs and controls them does matter. It created billionaires who then double as political state-aligned actors, usurping politics or getting usurped.

Welcome to a live demonstration of how "Gleichschaltung" tries to evolve in practise. Vividly remember my disbelief in the 90ties that so many people thought they would never be susceptible to it. The pandemic certainly showed the mass-social possibilities of vast "mood shifts" in what we call "society". Nobody was unaffected, as nobody can fully ignore their environment, especially their peer groups. See also "Extraordinarily popular delusions and the madness of crowds", from the 1840ties.

Flooding the public discourse zone with BS is a classic authoritarian technique to push agendas and destroy any notion of "facts", to increase the number of people who "keep out" and stop mustering the energy against all the crap. Evasion is helpful to not get burned. Offline times, life enjoyment and small solidarity and coordination/support things one can effect and work on with a few others, is more helpful than being glued to media, especially mainstream ones.

Ideologies of work: which kinds of machine noises are not talked about and accepted everyday (cars, big streets), and which machine noises are taken as a nuisance to be complained about (music from loudspeakers in parks and public places). One is for transport, the other is for enjoyment. One emits and signifies toxicity and alienation, the other invites for a shared convivial space.

"why do I talk" is a question haunting me. Maybe it is to understand, see and feel myself by observing the reactions? There is this assumption in talking that it is understood in the way that led to the utterances. That rarely matches but it's those differences, those gaps, sometimes chasms, that allow me to realize what I said? Language already is reciprocal, a mutual tool, and thinks / expresses me. That "I" in the question is less solid and has more fuzzy boundaries than typically assumed.

Am now in the third month of not looking at news sites and only gather news from talking with people, and engaging, reading on the fediverse .... And while I can't report avoiding "existential dread" feelings they have receded. I gained some distance at least which feels healthier than following news sites directly.

Can't help but think that social media mostly indicates a failure and lack of real life convivial and enjoyable spaces to hang out with others. I.e we live in asocial sourroundings and use social media to compensate, try reestablish some sociality. That being said there is this freedom to engage with others through time and space who would be hard to convene physically. So it's maybe not entirely useless and a symptom of bad ;)

Phew, just stumbled on a twitter profile of someone i considered to be intelligent and sensible in former times, from the Python community. Now straight on a Schwurbel/Pro-AFD right-wing drive. What do i do with that? Haven't had any contact for some 6-7 years but still, it bothers me. If anyone has experiences to share for similar situations (and action or inaction you choose) i'd be curious.

Most new interesting projects in the social media or messenger space get started by few or even single people. That's totally fine. But if years into development, with a sizable user community, a very hyped project is still centered on a single person with no cooperative dev community to speak of I consider it a warning sign. Mid to long term it is not (only) individual genius but cooperation abilities and practises that allow evolving a sustainable alternative app or service.

For those introducing #newcomers to the fediverse .... There are sometimes like 50 boosts for intro posts but only a single follower for a newcomer after the virality. That's a weird experience for newcomers, no? Instead of (just) boosting I suggest to follow such accounts at least for some time.

Any social media, including the fediverse, is prone to create "hate mobs". They may not be algorithmically amplified and not be driven by bots but humans aiming for "takes that go viral" and reinforce a certain sentiment (be it against maga, be it against AI, be it against billionaires) go some way. Just saying. See also "extraordinary popular delusions and the madness of crowds" from Charles McKay, an incredible journalistic book from 1840ties where nothing like social media existed.

Its hard to not notice how the powers that be in the US are aligning to launch attacks on trans communities. Meta's turn to open the floodgates of hate speech is another move of this evolving alignment. It is likely that "social media" in general will become more problematic and toxic than it is already ... The fediverse at least offers a fighting chance. If it's "only" a few million people it's still that, especially if it can withstand or evade the billionaire/populist fueled attacks.

On the current timeline 2025 appears dangerously close to 1933 .... The future is unwritten, however. Our prediction thinking, focused on perpetuating the Past, is similarly biased as are training sets of LLMs. Generating selective understanding, impressed by the interest and money of powerful people and their friends . In fact, the Future is as determined as the Past. Both are unknowable, can only be speculated about. So let's speculate our way out of 1933-fear in 2025 ... Happy new year :)
