I notice that most "small" distros are too big to fit on a CD-ROM.

2GB minimum? Hahaha no way amigo.

Attempting to run TinyCore 15.0 on an ancient laptop. The Chromium browser's ciphers are too old for most TLS, so many sites don't load. Firefox simply refuses to run at all (I suspect it's running out of RAM then just giving up). Lynx runs well though. A commandline win. #Linux

You are toiling on your allocated strip of land outside your village, but most of your produce is going in tithes to the Lord. The Lord is supposed to be providing protection, but this “social contract” doesn't seem to be working out, and the Lord just seems to squander his wealth on banquets and fancy ornamental swords.

So you move to the town and join a company. Now most of what you produce isn't just going straight to the Lord. But your wages seem awfully meager compared to the amount of goods that you're producing, and your landlord seems to be taking most of it. One type of lord got replaced by another.

Another thought, although not a new one, is that if Novara media is still on Twitter then they need an exit strategy for that and need to be directing their viewers to other sites. Continuing to recommend sites which are likely to purge any remaining lefties is a losing strategy. Do not assume that Musk will be nice or reasonable.

If you havn't already developed an exit strategy from #BigTech then it's time to bump that up your priority list.

At some future time Musk will try to backpeddle - for narrow self-serving reasons of course - but there really is no going back from that image. If he wasn't an oligarch it would be an immediate career ender.

Eventually, Elon Musk will want you to forget about that photo of him, even if it's only for narrow commercial/marketing reasons. Make sure that it sticks around so that it can't be brushed under the carpet and becomes his permanent brand.

Why are flagship instances bad? They become impossible to moderate and require increasingly huge funding. They also create an unhealthy power structure. As funding levels increase, resorting to advertising becomes more attractive, as also does selling data or access to it. And if an instance gets large enough then it has just reinvented Twitter along with all the same problems. Big instances are also susceptible to corporate capture.

Have been saying it for ages but I don't think “flagship” instances are a good idea. Instead have a site which does something analogous to memory allocation with an allowlist of nursery instances.

Because the same LLM scrapers keep coming back for more it's obvious that they are not smart enough to realize that they are ingesting entropy.

After reports of Elon Musk - a clown with more money than sense - doing nazi salutes at the Trump inauguration I am thinking of my grandparents and what they went through in WW2. There is a photo of one of my grandfathers from 1943 on the wall. Black and white photos don't fade much, it seems. In her later years one of my grandmothers used to get absolutely throwing stuff across the room enraged when she saw historical documentaries about the nazis on telly.

Added instance tags in #Epicyon. These are a line at the top of each post which tells you what the instance domain name and software type is. So at a glance you can see who is running on non-mastodon software.

I hope that people in Europe see what Musk was doing the other day, and never use Twitter/X again. His politics were known before, but nothing beats the power of an image.

I was today years old when I fully realized just what a scam water privatization has been. So if your water supplier is doing a bad job and pumping raw sewage into the rivers, and you want to change supplier, you can't. According to Ofwat, there is no domestic water supply market. You just get what you're allocated from the top down, and that's it.

So when water was originally privatized in the 1980s they were just handing the ability to extract profits to friends of the government, with none of the supposed benefits of market competition or consumer choice.
