James Acaster: Hecklers Welcome, 2024 - ★★★

Funny!  Got bored occasionally, but lost it a few times.

The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer, 1947 - ★★★

Funny, and not quite what I expected.  Interesting as an “accidental period piece” with a lot to say about life and attitudes in the late-1940s USA.

I’ve been enjoying #RackAndSlay, a tactical #roguelite based on billiards. Creative, quite well executed, and decidedly good value at £5.

Toy Story 3, 2010 - ★★★★★

The perfect conclusion to a wonderful trilogy, wrapping up every thread from the first two films with heart and originality. A perfect balance of comedy and drama, new and old, action sequences and tender moments. Maybe some of it is nostalgia, but the theme of growing up and struggling to let go of something really hit home with me each time I've watched this film, and really makes it something special.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, 2018 - ★★

There was no compelling case for a sequel to Mamma Mia, and this was a weak attempt.  Donna’s history is better left to the imagination, there’s not much new to say about the present-day characters, and they’ve truly run out of ABBA hits to squeeze into the story.

Mamma Mia!, 2008 - ★★★

Very joyful, if silly.  Lots of sexy people on screen a lot of the time.  Colin Firth at his best, and Pierce Brosnan’s defining role.

Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, 2024 - ★★★

This is not a classic Wallace & Gromit adventure. Its scope is wider, there are recurring characters, the writing and animation styles are markedly different, and of course the voice of Wallace has changed. It might have been possible to recapture that old magic, but instead this film is something new, and it's a lot of fun. I laughed a lot.

Shrek 2, 2004 - ★★★

I’ve seen this film a hundred times, but I’m still spotting new jokes and details I’d always missed.  For the first time I noticed how staccato the conversations are – the actors all recorded their lines separately, and they aren’t cut together in a natural way.

A Matter of Loaf and Death, 2008 - ★★★

A fitting “back to basics” instalment after Were-Rabbit took things a bit too far.  I never could’ve thought of so many baking puns.

This is the Christmas that I discovered sounf – sugar coated fennel seeds apparently popular in #India

Am I the only one who hasn’t heard of these delightful things?

P.S. I Love You, 2007 - ★★★

Not as predictable as it might’ve been, and funny and touching.  I had trouble identifying with the main pair, which can spoil a romcom.

A Close Shave, 1995 - ★★★

I still think of this as the new over-the-top Wallace & Gromit film even though it's 30 years old. It's a lot of fun, but doesn't have the simple joy of the first two.

Dishwasher at work was recently adorned with a magnet that you can spin round to show what state the dishes are in.

I thought this would be wrong too often to be useful, but so far I've only ever seen it in the correct state.

This magnet is in fact a #wiki, and it works for the same reason all wikis work: most people want it to be correct, and can update it easily.
