Examples-

"Sorry, you cannot enter, your passport is invalid. It doesn't match your original birth certificate. No, you have to re-apply for a new passport. No, you cannot enter the country because your passport is invalid. No, the country you left won't take you either, because you now have no passport."

BTW, this was why I was so outraged when the Obama administration canceled Edward Snowden's passport in transit. They canceled his proof of citizenship, and nobody did anything because he 'might be a bad man'.

Now anybody can be denied entry using similar rhetoric, but that dark pattern can be applied to anything the current government doesn't like.

Couple that with selective deportation, and you don't need camps.

So, this is what I was talking about. People were worried about camps, but really the idea is to make it impossible for anyone but the "favored" to re-enter the country. Easier than camps, because it makes "undesirables" someone else's burden.

This is something that people in what became "red states" have done for decades to folks who didn't fit in. They crowded them into blue enclaves.

And that is what red states then did to migrants. Flood cities and states with people the red states didn't want. Crush them under the weight of people and ruin their support systems. And if there are camps? That was for the overflow, for when those systems and goodwill failed.

And for people who are less favored, especially LatinX, they simply deport people (even US citizens) and lose their paperwork. And it takes money to even try to get back in.

The latest thing? Make even birthright citizenship questionable. Simply keep them out of the country once they leave the border. Keep delaying every meeting, and bleed them dry while they wait and can never make it back home.

And what I said about US fascism being difficult for Americans to struggle against- how many of you USians reading this were aware this is how it is done? When were you aware? Why didn't you fight it then? Can you really fight your flavor of fascism if you are inured to the stench of it?

I say this as someone who worked for a major company that adopted an asterisk in its logo. The asshole jokes never stopped.

Wasn't going to say this before, but the three asterisk symbol someone is pushing for the Fediverse symbol literally looks like a stack of assholes.

After being involved in activism on and off most of my life, and also working tech most of my life, here is my advice to activists:

Your community building must include people who can build and maintain your platforms. And you need to reach out to those people, and listen to their concerns.

Skipping this step will set you up for failure later.

I have mixed feelings about Tuta's way of "encrypting" emails to external users.

On the one hand, I would really like to see GPG implementations at the provider level that make it easy for users to use, share, and verify their keys.

On the other hand, I've yet to run into providers OR users who weren't shit at this. When they could ever be bothered in the first place. And software to do this is shit too (if it wasn't, everyone would be standing up servers for these things, and every user would go, yeah, oh, sorry, here is my key).

So, opening the email within a temporary encrypted webmail client connection for external users? Well, that is what some of my doctors and fintech institutions do, so... :flan_shrug:

If you aren't going to use content warnings, please add #uspol to your posts.

Yes, you.

No, not some weird angry misspelling.

Yes, I'm including your last vaguepost.

No, not that other user over there.

You. Please.

If you can't be bothered to use a CW (Content Warning) for #USpol, or for #Trump, #MAGA, #fascists, then please take the briefest second and use a hashtag. I mean, it is literally just one extra character.

At a minimum, please use #uspol as a hashtag for US stuff.

Please use real names for the people you have issues with- Dolt45, 45/47, Orange Julius, Tangerine Toddler, etc... nobody is going to be able to filter those out. Some people are either going to be materially harmed by this person, their administration, and/or their followers- or they have been. Or they don't live in the US and really don't want to see this right now.

So, use names people can filter against, and please consider that some people have had enough USian trauma for today.

I know some superloyal folks are upset that so many USians are "surrendering their data to RedNote", and are baffled that USians would willingly do this.

I wonder how many superloyal USians have considered that USians are very well aware that they are continuously being spied on in the US by US companies that are happy to hand over everything to US officials at the drop of a hat? There are markets for this behavior. Financial ecosystems that trade USian data to the US government all the time. USians know they are being spied on all the time.

Ok. So. If the superloyal USians want all the other USians to stop talking to RedNote, maybe make rules on data privacy and retention equal to all under the law? I mean, if it is bad for TikTok to allegedly do it, bad enough to ban TikTok to protect ALL USians, then maybe it should also be bad for Meta, MSoft, X, etc to do exactly the same thing, but with more layers.

You know how equality under the law for all is supposed to be a core USian tenet, especially for the superloyal USians? Yeah, all the other TikTok using USians are well aware this ban smells of bullshit and not roses. And they are protesting in kind (another core US tenet).

I've used 28 of 300 available #Kagi searches, and I'm halfway through the month on their cheapest $5 plan. Yes, you can look up how many you use per day.

There is a lot of personalization you can do to eliminate crap search results (like spiceworks). Kagi also does a decent job of filtering out the worse ones, so it isn't super noticable.

So, am I searching less? Yes. I pay per search. But I've found that I also don't do as much searching if I literally stop for 30-60s and think about what it is that I'd be looking for. I mean, 28 searches in 15 days...

Somebody: So, when did you know you were a Sysadmin?

Me: Everybody tells me "just get me the file", but when it comes time for them to get me the file, it takes a phone call at least 15 minutes long.

Somebody: Uh... like this phone call?

Me: Yes.

Many people in most US states not understanding that LA county (9.66M) evacuating and moving out of state could completely upend their electoral politics overnight.

Yes, LA County is that populous. It has more people than any one of 40 other US states. And that is just ONE CA county.

I really should finish my half-finished home network project so I can run live packet traces on scam calls I receive. Making some scammer's life absolutely fucking miserable would make me feel better right now.

I'm not angry because someone tried to scam me. I'm angry because they are succeeding enough times with other people that they actually made the mistake of calling me. A lot of people who can't afford to lose their savings are getting hurt by this.

People wonder why I keep my old phone number from another state. I would have been too rattled to think about whether this was a scam if this had originated with a local number to where I'm living now.

The scammer was faking a call from the Sacramento County Sherriff's office, calling me on an outstanding federal warrant for a missed court appearance on a hate crime from November.

I haven't been in CA for many years. The guy had an approximation of the local accent down, but made some mistakes.

A real officer, reaching out to you, will never get riled up when you ask them for a badge number so you can call the main office and have your call forwarded to their desk.

The complete silence on the other end of the line when I demanded their badge number so I could call people I know in the Sherriff's office and have his call directly connected was all I needed to know.
