Hey #scientist nerds. Do you publish? What paper are you most proud of? Link me up. Any topic is good. I'd like to spend my weekend reading your work.

Nothing is so inspiring to me as the collective efforts at better understanding our world.

According to my home network stats i spend the most computer time on #IRC and the most bandwidth on #Usenet. These are the same stats for me as in 1995 but somehow tell a very different story today.

I'm listening to music from a local band I loved in 1994. I'm reminded of a long hiking trip I did when I was 16. There was a bootleg cassette recording of one of their shows I'd listen on my walkman in my tent as the fire burned down at night. The stars were so bright.

If I take #AI out of the context of its resource costs and threats to art and truth and think about it purely from the convenience aspect it feels like talking to the computer on the Enterprise in #startrek .

"Computer, compile all the puns in the works of Shakespeare and cross reference them with cultural reference from that time."

or more specific to my daily use: "Computer, enable a vpn connection to Norway for this one app and lock down it's connections to avoid any data leaks."

That feels pretty cool. I wish it could be just that. I don't see a way to get from where we are to there safely, though. And the costs aren't worth the convenience.

Listening to a mix and the brilliant Randy Edelman theme from #Dragonheart ("To the stars") came on. I asked my wife if she recognized it and she said yes, but didn't know where it was from. A little more poking and this seems to be a trend. It's a highly recognizable melody from a rather forgettable #film (don't come at me for that... i like it too).

So now I'm wondering, what other awesome #music do we have and know well from works that are forgettable?

I installed Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis via GOG. Run the game - opening credits playing like a film whole I go through a slapstick comedy trying to find a statue. Introduces basic gameplay in an engaging way while also priming the story. Really phenomenal transition to cutscene and then actual game. Everything feels seamless. I can't think of many other games that start as strongly.

I don't want to add much more psychological burden on everyone feeling low right now, but it feels important to share a thought:

If you are in the US military or close to those who are, have a chat with them about where their line is for "following orders". Do that now, while you can.

Going to be in Reykjavík this weekend? On Saturday at 13:30-15:00 I'll be giving a presentation and holding a creative workshop called "Envisioning a Nordic Solarpunk Future" at the downtown library (1st floor). There's free food, and I'll have a few giveaways at the end.

I had a dream I was taking my cat for a walk to the fish mongers around town to meet everyone and get him snacks. He was very excited and we spent time exploring. Then I woke up to a world where I don't have a cat. I'm going back to sleep.

I'm trying out this multi-protocol social app, Openvibe. It's got Mastodon, Bluesky, Threads, and Nostr support. I know the first three, but I'd never heard of Nostr before. I signed up and this will post there, but everything I'm reading about it is confusing. Anyone know the ELI5 TL;DR?

In happier news, I think I'm going to play Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. Should be fun and distracting, but first I need to make my presentation for the conference on Saturday.

Pretty dark day. Still wasn't expecting Nazi salutes from the speakers at the inauguration.
