Goede beslissing van NWO om met Twitter te stoppen per vandaag, maar de website heeft nog even wel een update nodig om geen mixed signals uit te stralen. Wellicht vervangen door linkjes naar een officieel NWO account op de fediverse op bv https://social.edu.nl/ ?

In the scope of the Globalise project we've worked on automatic language identification of letters that were shipped back home by the VOC (East India Company) from 1610 to 1796, as preserved by the National Archive. They've been digitised, and automatically transcribed. While the vast majority is in Dutch (unsurprisingly), there are some notable and beautiful exceptions. For the first time ever I actually resorted to using an LLM (llama3.1, offline) to write a simple function for me, in lua (because I don't know lua). I have to admit it worked out nicely though I do feel a bit dirty now...

Today the US decides whether to take a sharp right turn towards full-on fascism or hobble on on the bumpy road of flawed democracy. US citizens are the only ones who can vote (if even; voter suppression), but their vote has large implications for the rest of us unfortunately (Ukraine and the middle east are paying in blood already). In 2016 I dared to be optimistic they surely wouldn't vote for an idiot like Trump en-masse, I no longer hold such illusions unfortunately. Dare I hope for the best?

This is a nice day to be working on man pages for #sxmo , and ensure our documentation is all up to date, as on this day in 1971 the first edition of the man pages were published in the Unix Programmer's Manual.

Documentation only works if it's complete and up to date, as illustrated nicely in my favourite Geek & Poke comic.

99,9% of smartphone users already enjoyed seeing a clock and status icons on their phone's lockscreen. Now we #sxmo users are joining the mainstream crowd (something we do only reluctantly if we really need to, and in our own hackable & minimalist way!). I implemented a clock and status icon support in our lockscreen 'peanutbutter' (patch still pending review and merge).

Yesterday evening we attended a beautiful #starwars #concert in #eindhoven, performed by the Ukrainian International Symphony Orchestra and the National Choir of Ukraine "Dumka''. I must say, the theme of a fight against an evil empire surely gets an extra dimension this way. 🇺🇦
