I love #java, I love Checked Exceptions, I love lambdas; but there is no curse in Elvish, Entish, or the tongues of Men for the treachery that is checked exception handling in lambdas. Argh.

Suddenly have more free time on my hands. Looking for an interesting FOSS #java project to sink my teeth into. Not interested in AI or annotation-driven programming.

Suggestions and boosts appreciated.

[#]FOSDEM is nearly upon us. Looks like a bunch of excellent #java folks will be attending. Has anyone planned any pre-FOSDEM Java activities?

Can we please all agree to stay the fuck away from any code involving Date & Time handling unless you know what you're doing?

I spend way too much time (hah!) cleaning up shit caused by incompetent time handling.

The #java DateTime API (and Joda before), while not terribly ergonomic, has all the components you need. But when I see people convert LocalDate to Instant to Date to Long to subtract a number AND THEN BACK AGAIN, I can't help but feel a wee bit murderous.

Ah fun with Lenovo again. In need of a new laptop. The P14s Gen 4 AMD is available with a 2.8k screen, but only if you select Windows as an OS. If you configure the machine without an OS, the screen isn't available and you're stuck with 1920x1200.

What the fuck.

I guess their laptop configurator was generated by AI or some such nonsense. Truly awful shopping experience, again.

Will probably spend my weekend diving into #activitypub implementations. Tempted to run my own mastodon instance, but not a big fan of running Ruby foo. It would be nice if someone had already written a #Java implementation, but I guess that's wishful thinking on my part.

Twelve years ago two publishers reached out to me to get me to write a book in the Java sphere. I now regret not taking them up on the offer. I spent a decade working on a great product for a great company, giving it my all, neglecting my personal projects. Then they got acquired and I got booted. The severance package wasn't worth the many sacrifices over the years.

Sometimes I'm a bit slow in realising the important things.

Back from #devoxx. Great conference as per usual. Lots of interesting talks, to the point that I have a new found appreciation for Oracle and the way they're stewarding #Java.

One negative remark: not enough snacks. First time I've ever LOST weight at a conference.
