Are Mozilla execs still getting multimillion dollar salaries? I just saw a skilled team lead position posted with $120k USD target and wondered how badly they need a union.

Starting my day with someone telling me I’m a jerk for closing their bug report as invalid. The all too familiar cycle was “I appreciate the work y'all do” -> “no, my interpretation of the spec is more correct that yours” -> “I can’t believe how rude you are for not changing a 15 year old behavior to accommodate my preferences”. #FOSSlife

No new side quests appeared on work day #4 of 2025! I got a works for me version of WikimediaDebug using manifest v3 (Chrome’s “it’s ok to make extensions as long as they can’t block ad content” spec) uploaded to Gerrit. I also had a productive discussion with folks about desires for our next generation deployment process.

Work day #3 went mostly the same. Slack demanded I work on Puppet problems that nobody had looked after for literally months, eating up my morning. The afternoon found me back in Friday’s rabbit hole which had also haunted my weekend. I did manage to find some approaching daylight in both problem sets.

I made a big batch of beef birria on New Year’s Eve. We had quesabirria for dinner that night and birria chilaquiles for brunch on New Year’s Day. Today we turned the rest into tamales.

So far in 2025 I have worked 2 days and fallen into 2 deep rabbit holes that I had no idea would be in my way when the day started. It’s going to keep going like this isn’t it?

I think my most successful software project of 2024 was the revamp of the wikibugs irc bot. This developer experience tool has been evolving for the Wikimedia community since 2004. The current incarnation is a collaboration of 6 internal processes that monitor the Wikimedia Phorge (née Phabricator), Gerrit, and GitLab instances for interesting events and announce them on IRC.

https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikibugs#History

I actually would like to revisit this project in 2025 and make it easier to add new output channels. I also have some ideas for getting the bot data on more GitLab events by working around features that open-core monstrosity keeps hidden in its paid versions.
