When I say a long time, I posted a PR to Crystal 6 years ago for it. 😄

If my library works as well as I hope, I'll pick that original PR back up.

Finally published a library I've wanted for a long time: a Crystal type for dealing with both calendar and monotonic durations in the same object.

The only surprising thing to me about this is that the number is that low. I assumed a popularity metric would be gamed so much harder than that.

No acknowledgement that two immutable objects with identical state being unequal doesn't make sense, which is what I went in there to fix.

All I got was judgement of my use case despite the fact that it not working for my use case is almost certainly an accident. All the while the maintainers were patting each other on the back in emoji reactions.

That doesn't leave me with a good feeling.

Here's an example of this in action, with myself as the contributor. Responses from 3 maintainers in the thread:

Desperate people will do desperate things. Unfortunately, they often do them to similarly desperate people.

But when enough people are desperate, some of those that made it that way will find themselves on the receiving end of those desperate actions.

So don't harm large groups of people to make yourself rich. No amount of wealth makes your flesh impervious to weapons that are widely accessible in this country.

FWIW, I think violence is bad, but healthcare in the US is awful because people like that guy get rich by denying others lifesaving medical care.

When powerful people create conditions where the only voice regular people have is violence, they can't be surprised when that voice is invoked. The people will speak, one way or another. Those in power need to make sure they're listening when peace is still on the table if they don't want the alternative.

Usually when things go wrong on my computer, it's one of these things. They're all safe to restart, so I literally just write plzwork in a terminal and things generally start working again.

Just in case folks need it, here is the shell function I use when basically anything stop working in macOS. It restarts all of these things:

… and flushes the DNS cache.

plzwork () {
	killall Dock corespotlightd "Universal Control"
	sudo killall -9 -e bluetoothd coreaudiod
	sudo dscacheutil -flushcache
	sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder
}

Someday, I want to write about how OSS fosters an us-vs-them mentality, pitting project maintainers against external contributors. It happens on both sides.

The TL;DR is that the maintainers have a rapport with each other and an intimate understanding of the project. Contributors are usually trying to scratch their own itches.

Contributors often think maintainers don't care about their use case and maintainers often see contributors as ignorant of the effort req'd to maintain it.
