Only one ISS pass for this area today, but it was a successful one!

Recording audio in the moment and decoding later is the way to go. #SSTV

Anyway, the goal is to get in the backyard with an HT and yagi for the upcoming ISS SSTV event. Thinking about using the Sony pocket recorder to record the audio. I'm guessing that will be easier than trying to decode with the iPhone in real time.

Been experimenting with SSTV decoding. The best decode in this example is a direct capture from the FT-857 + SignaLink w/ QSSTV app.

The worst capture is holding an iPhone up to the 857’s speaker decoded with Black Cat’s app.

Oddly, the mid quality is from holding a Sony pocket recorder next to the 857’s speaker then playing the recording back to the iPhone and Black Cat’s app.

The other major issue to keep in mind is that all these services, LoTW, etc., are running with no redundancy, currently. So a bad power surge or a dead hard drive platter, and these things are all toast.

If you've spent any time in IT or development, this is really tough to watch. ARRL director goes into detail on the issues leading up to the ransom payment, and what they're still dealing with.

Discussion starts at about 16 minutes into the video.

And finally, this is what a 10,000 watt dummy load looks like

The engineer giving the tour worked there for 33 years. Talked about how small and incredibly reliable systems are now. This is a 6 piece modular amplifier. 5 modules can go down and the transmitter keeps working (at lower power output).

Massive prep occurs before and during the airing of the Super Bowl because it’s such a huge revenue generator from the commercials.

Generators are tested. All engineers are on site the day of. They even keep the backup transmitter running into a dummy load.

Master control used to be run remotely out of Atlanta but the new station owners brought it back local.

During the Christmas bombing that caused a major AT&T outage, the station couldn’t get on the air because the fiber lines to Atlanta were down

What are the chances that wide spectrum SDRs were recording in the Lebanon area and captured the trigger signal?

Almost certainly the offending government was able to intercept the supply lines of Hezbollah to modify devices and achieve these highly targeted attacks. It's unlikely random devices on eBay contain this sophisticated modification.

I'd be interested in the setup used to trigger the HT based explosions. Did they use ham bands? Were the devices modified to accept a separate signal on a different band? Did the HT have to be powered on?

A lot of design and effort went into this.

If you're in the DC area, NPR is auctioning off a boatload of broadcast equipment and general IT related items. Even some ham gear in there. Looks like it's local pickup only: https://rasmus.com/auctions/LbP63ahoGy8AwhIwx1dU/a/Broadcast-IT---A-V-Studio-Equipment-Washington--DC
