I recently came across the English term "fellow traveler" in an article about Leni Riefenstahl. I didn't know the English term, but in German it is Mitläufer and in my native Flemish it is "meeloper", and the connotation is always negative.

“I may remind you,” Holmes continued, “that the professor’s salary can be ascertained in several trustworthy books of reference. It is seven hundred a year.” (from The Valley of Fear by Arthur Conan Doyle)
Those were the days: "several trustworthy books of reference", imagine that.

More on the music in the chapter titles in my story "Running AMOC" (https://selfedge.org.uk/fiction/running-AMOC/). They are all taken from songs of the 90s or thereabouts.
Chapter 4 is from “Accuracy” by The Cure.

There is a notion (*) called end-gaining, which describes the tendency we have to want to achieve a short-term goal without considering the effect of the approach we take on our longer-term goals.
The use of tools that replace cognitive activity is a form of end-gaining. For example, if we rely entirely on a calculator, it is not likely that we will retain the ability to do mental arithmetic; spelling and grammar checkers have a similar effect on our syntactical and grammatical writing skills; depending on GPS eventually means erosion of map reading skills; and relying on generative AI for generating text or code means in the long run loss of our ability to write text or code ourselves.
(*) coined by F. M. Alexander of the eponymous Technique

The above makes it sound too easy. I took it apart and then it sat there gathering dust for months. By then I had forgotten the order in which I had taken it apart and what went where (should have recorded it or at least taken some pics, lessons learned and all that). And unfortunately no vids for this old type. So some fun reverse engineering. Anyway, all's well etc.

I finally repaired our vacuum cleaner. It took rather longer than expected, mainly because it took a ridiculously long time to get utterly ordinary parts such as 10 m of electric cord of the right spec. Partly because I didn't want to buy any of it on line, but also just procrastination.
So anyway, took the thing apart, repaired it and put it back together and, what a rush, it works!
Sooo rewarding. Can strongly recommend!

I feel it would be more honest for the Labour Party to change their name to the Capitalist Party. At leas the would reflect their ideology, which seems to be growth at all costs, cut the state, don't tax the rich, and believe in a tech magic bullet.

"Oh, I'll break them down, no mercy shown,
Heaven knows, it's got to be this time,
Avenues all lined with trees,
Picture me and then you start watching,
Watching forever, forever,
Watching love grow, forever,
Letting me know, forever."
