I've been rewatching the classic era of #RedDwarf lately. I loved it a lot from its first broadcast and throughout the VHS era, but hadn't gone back in a long time.

A lot of it holds up, but I'd forgotten how generally bleak and sour its whole vibe had gotten behind the jokes. From Series V, if you squint at the screen a little you can see Grant and Naylor hating the crap out of each other more and more with each episode.

Nine years ago today - January 12, 2016 - was my first date with my beloved wife @gilahava704. That evening upgraded my life forever.

I sketched this today based on the first ever photo I ever took of Gila, on a subsequent date sixteen days later, because it had already gotten serious enough between us that I needed a contact pic for her in my phone.

In the 2000s I went back to look at a #Usenet newsgroup which had been a major part of my online life in the 1990s. All the people had gone, but the spambots were still there. The entire contents of the group were just bot spam, automatically generated and posted at nobody to be read by no one. The bots were even replying to one another’s threads with more spam. A forum where genuine human interactions had forged friendships and fostered community over some years had dwindled to nothing more than grift machines trying to sell crap to each other.

20 years later the same shit is going down again with a new coat of #AI paint, this time with revenue and shareholders involved.

One of the #PublicDomainDay gifts to the world about which I'm most excited this year is 1929's "The Cocoanuts," the first cinematic outing of the #MarxBrothers

Dig the famous Florida land auction bit, the "why a duck?" exchange, and the Marx characters themselves. (CW: 1920s attitudes, one glaring ethnic slur, and some of the drearier non-Marx musical numbers in their canon.)

I'm over the moon about my favorite old comedy team's much-delayed entry into the Public Domain, and included with this film is the Marxes' basic characters which remained pretty consistent over the course of their work. I'm excited not only to share this film, but to see what creative folks can do with it going forward.

I have had a copy of the obscure and insane #MadMagazine #BoardGame for ages but hadn't used it until @gilahava704 and I finally played a round last night. It's such a trip, and I could see it being even more fun with more people.

The game is basically a Monopoly spoof, but the object of the game is to lose first.
