For years I carried with me the idea of writing a critique of the concept of "privacy" as a bourgeois western concept.
Last summer I (more accidentally, thanks to co-author @mareikelisker) was invited to contribute to a text with a similar intention.
I am very happy to see it published, open access, now.
It shaped out to be more of a manifesto, a passionate intervention, than a sober analysis but it's no less a text I am happy to see available. Abolish privacy!

Now it seems like the term achieved the opposite though.
Much like Zuboffs "surveillance capitalism" the term "enshittification" has successfully replaced any structural criticism of capitalism. We are again left with talking about some unwelcome symptoms of (digital) capitalism while - unintentionally - reinforcing the idea that "competition" and "markets" are in fact working and suitable systems of economic organisation.
It de-radicalized the debate instead of radicalizing it.

The fact that "enshittification" as a term was successfully popularized in public discourse seemed like a win to me at first. To me it accurately serves as a synonym to "capitalist competition" and "market" (the driving dynamics behind the problems of platforms and digital services).
It did that and simultaneously offered a new vocabulary that did not immediately alienate liberals, much like "democratizing the economy" replaced "economic planning".

Die These (von J. Hoffmann), dass der nicht nachweisbare Effekt von "Desinformation" auch im Interesse nicht-digitaler Medien im Diskurs platziert ist, finde ich sehr charmant.
Darüber hinaus scheinen mir die Plattformen selbst aber auch dankbare Nutznießer dieser Scheindebatte: Statt über deren Microtargeting-Infrastrukturen zu reden, debattieren wir über diffuse externe Parteien und darüber, wie diese die "guten Plattformen" missbrauchen. Zuboff wäre stolz auf diesen Taschenspielertrick.

Bei aller (zB finanziellen) Unterstützung, die das GFF Gutachten verdient, dürfen wir uns davon nicht bis zu seiner Veröffentlichung lähmen und stumm machen lassen.
Die AfD ist(!) eine verfassungswidrige Partei. Die Voraussetzungen des Art. 21 GG liegen vor. Dass das Verfahren nicht längst beim BVerfG läuft, ist ein historischer Fehler.
Diese Klarheit darf jetzt nicht ins Wanken geraten.

Darin liegt gleichzeitig auch ein Risiko: Wie auch beim "Künast-Antrag" läuft die zivilgesellschaftliche Debatte dank des GFF-Gutachtens jetzt Gefahr, bei der Verbotsforderung zurück zu fallen auf ein zögerliches "Wir prüfen erstmal".
Diesen Punkt haben wir in der Debatte längst überschritten (siehe Bündnis hinter @AfDVerbotJetzt, siehe Gutachten des Instituts für Menschenrechte, siehe Gutachten der 17 Profs oder den offenen Brief von über 600 Jurist*innen).

Zum Gutachten der @Freiheitsrechte betreffend das #AfDVerbot:
Dass die GFF ein Gutachten über die Erfolgsaussichten eines Verbotsverfahrens schreiben lässt, ist super wertvoll. Das Gewicht seiner Ergebnisses lebt davon, dass die GFF dabei maximal unparteiisch auftritt. Es ergibt innerhalb der Logik des Messaging rund um das Gutachten also völlig Sinn, sich auf die Frage des "ob" der Verfassungswidrigkeit zu beschränken. Nur so kann es später überhaupt politische Wirksamkeit entfalten.
