"The man who slaughtered 51 Muslim worshippers during the deadliest mass-shooting in New Zealand’s history hated Muslims.

In the aftermath of the horrific attacks, New Zealanders swore that his values weren’t ours. They - we - pushed back on the ‘us’ and ‘them’ rhetoric of racism and islamophobia. Stickers popped up on the bumpers of cars and in shop windows that said ‘they are us’.

But was that true? Is it true now?"

"When I searched for documentaries on key events and change-makers in New Zealand’s LGBTQIA+ history, I found almost nothing – just a few old clips from Queer Nation. This glaring gap in access to our own history made me realise how essential it was to preserve these stories. With time running out, it felt urgent to capture the voices of those who had been part of these movements while we still could."

"Why, given privatisation’s manifold failures, does it retain even a shred of political relevance? Partly because it suits certain interests. But partly because of a political void where the alternative should be.

...

Opponents of privatisation, then, can get left looking like defenders of an inadequate status quo, lacking feasible reform ideas."

"Christchurch has long had an organics bin, Tauranga and New Plymouth collect food scraps and Nelson City Council provides composting vouchers to help people set up composting at home. Auckland City Council started food scraps collections nearly two years ago, .... While hundreds of thousands of people have adopted the habit of putting out their little green bin for collection, most people don’t think about where that waste goes. "

"Twenty five years ago[new years day], the world breathed a collective sight of relief when nothing particularly interesting happened.

...

Over the past few weeks, various news outlets have been releasing their "25 years later" commentary, and the consensus leans towards this was no big deal, and totally fine.

...

So I want to take a moment to go back to the past, and talk about the end of the 90s. Let's go for it."

"The government has quietly cancelled plans to improve recycling and roll out a kerbside food scraps composting scheme.

The Ministry for the Environment on Wednesday posted an update on its website saying the government has agreed four of five policies for waste minimisation had been put on hold.

No ministerial media release or statement was sent out notifying the public of the decision."

"Peters added for good measure: “Some of the comments I’ve heard about privatisation…are just ridiculous. [NZ] has been through that twice [with Fay-Richwhite and Toll.] It got run-down twice in the past....”

Indeed, [NZ] did end up having to buy back its rail service. Similarly, we also had to bail out the BNZ twice, spend $900 million to buy back ... in Air New Zealand – and ... to subsidise an aluminum smelter for all eternity."
