Iโ€™m not afraid of robots taking over because I still need to flip my vacuum over to clear all the stuck hair from the brushroll several times a year.

It is so humbling as a dev to try creating an embedded display driver, especially without a datasheet and the only implementation being for a C++ graphics framework. ๐Ÿ˜ตโ€๐Ÿ’ซ

I backed every Pebble Kickstarter and built apps for my watches. So Iโ€™m genuinely excited to develop for this new JS-based watch platform, powered by the Moddable SDK: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/pocuter/spectra

Last year, my knowledge of hardware was focused on microcontrollers & home automation with very little awareness about the wider world of robotics. Yesterday, I observed my first meeting of the Open Source Robotics Alliance (OSRA) where I was formally introduced as the representative for Viam! ๐Ÿ™Œ

A year ago, I set out to bring together two platforms with similar goals of making hardware and automation more accessible: Viam and Home Assistant. Now Iโ€™m happy to share the community integration that brings on-device ML to your home!

Itโ€™s great to see the local meetup scene start to come back to life in NYC. Iโ€™m stoked to attend Chinatown.js in a couple weeks!

To demonstrate the concept, I created a robot server in Node.js paired with a simple web app using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to blink an LED in real-time ๐Ÿ˜„ Overall, this experience helped me understand the fundamentals of how Viam works with its various SDKs to control devices with peer-to-peer connections around the world.

Last week I had an incredible time presenting โ€œReal-Time Robot Control from the Browser with WebRTCโ€ at Thunderplains in Oklahoma City. This talk was the opportunity for me to dig into the history of WebRTC, how the underlying technology could be implemented for embedded devices, and how it can be applied to controlling robots!

So exciting to see Raspberry Pi continue to develop the Pico line with the release of the RP2350 & Pico 2 with more performance, better power management, and optional RISC-V cores!

https://www.raspberrypi.com/news/raspberry-pi-pico-2-our-new-5-microcontroller-board-on-sale-now/

While it's still years away from mainstream, the release of RISC-V development products from StarFive, Espressif, and Raspberry Pi will certainly help build up software support across the ecosystem. It could overtake ARM in MCUs relatively quickly if these early bets pan out. ๐Ÿค”

๐Ÿค” Has open source helped you level up as technical leader?

I'm currently preparing a presentation about how I've observed and applied the practices of maintaining open source projects to the role of staff engineer.

It will mostly be anecdotes from my experiences, but I'd like to hear what other folks have learned as well.

Have you maintained or contributed to an open source project?

Has that affected the way you work?

What projects have you seen demonstrate mature technical leadership?
