The trip to #FOSDEM is starting well, the train I was supposed to take is sort of cancelled, maybe also going via a different station. No proactive communication from NS (Dutch train company) at all, I only saw it on the departure board at the station. Taking a different one to Schiphol at least, maybe the train is running from there. Let's see when I get to Brussels...

(cont.) in the timeline, throw the subtitles into a translation software to translate the French bits into English, fix up the English bits that the translator messed up, align the English bits so they're not too slow or not too fast, figure out how to put font color into YouTube subtitles (hint: Subtitle Edit export in "SAMI YouTube" format works), and proof watch the whole video again and correct any mistakes.

It's probably not exaggerated that this all took more than 20 hours

Somehow I wonder if people collectively will even watch the amount of hours that were put into this.

Some rough outline of the steps: split audio track into English parts and French parts. Run all through transcription software to get a text form. Get French version correct and proof read by someone who speaks French. Splice the parts together to make a full transcript. Throw that into a tool to split them into text blocks that fit as subtitles under a video. Align those blocks manually (cont.)

It's taken way too many hours but I've finally finished up the subtitles for a talk I gave in November 2023 together with @agnes007

Big parts of it are in French and some in English so all the automatic subtitling tools I normally use didn't work on this video, so it was a lot of manual work, but it was also fun figuring out some new workflows there.

Fun server admin find of the day:

My (Matrix) Element installation didn't load many icons e.g. /icons/download.e51a8dc.svg correctly and just returned a 404, even a created foo.txt loaded correctly in other directories like /i18n/ but not in /icons/. After quite some debugging it looks like the default httpd-autoindex.conf globally sets an alias for /icons/ to /usr/share/httpd/icons/ which seems to break /icons/ subdirectory on any VirtualHost.

Disable that Alias definition and now icons load!

Fun learning of the day: Sometimes #Less (the style sheet language) calculates values, sometimes not. "@max-width-desktop" once gets replaced as "999px" and once as "1000px - 1px" - the letter doesn't work (in a media query at least)

Causes the wiki search bar to not appear on the #postmarketOS wiki.

My summer holiday this year was going to Tbilisi, Georgia (mostly) by train!

At least it kept the chat history, I'd have expected it to lose that also, based on other contacts that have changed their number at some point.

Border control was taking 45 minutes in a Flixbus going from Austria into Germany (close to Passau). Two people were questioned separately and now we're finally going again.

Not that anything has changed with the new rules now, this border control has been up and running for many years already.

Small rant: why do WhatsApp notifications (on Android) disappear as soon as you open the app? All the other messenger apps keep the notification until you've actually read that particular chat.

Especially when just quickly replying to one message on WhatsApp afterwards there's no info that there's other messages waiting for a response.

Only when another new message comes in then all the unreads reappear in the notification menu.
