This is great news!

https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2025/01/the-people-should-own-the-town-square/

"Simply, we are going to transfer ownership of key Mastodon ecosystem and platform components (including name and copyrights, among other assets) to a new non-profit organization, affirming the intent that Mastodon should not be owned or controlled by a single individual."

a community safety ritual: write down or bring to mind the names of those you commit to protecting, specific names, and targeted groups of people. it can be a long list or a short one, it just needs to be a true commitment for you.

it is our turn to carry the world

we are each other’s safety

right now, and every day

decide who you will protect

yourself, your own and who else

it’s time to cover all that we love

land, creature, place, person

intertwine your roots with mine

in this way our lives become miracles

there will be strangers

they will become comrades

we will each say our needs

we will learn to let community come closer

every part of us is a shield

our words, our trust, our hearts

our bodies in action

and the freedom to think for ourselves

we are the adaptation

no oppressor can imagine

our love is water – form-shifting power, river, vapor, life

we flood each other with belonging

we are building our stamina

we dream of the real world

we carry god, and see god, in each of our faces

your holiness is not too heavy, not for me

our attention and courage

show us the next stand to take

the next hill on which to hold each other

and if needed, the next hiding place: survive!

our imagination and memory

find the wisdom of our ancestors

find our future in the rubble

find the seeds in our songs

we choose our freedom

we keep each other’s souls intact

safer than any cage of empire

we know something better is coming

we are each other’s safety

we see each other’s freest selves

we will hold on tight, in public, in private

over and underground

and we will never let go

we will never let go

we will never let go

we will never let go

now take that piece of paper and memorize it – that is your spell of community safety. when you have it in your tongue and bones, bury it into dirt you love so the earth holds this commitment with you, with us.

axé oooo, ameen, amen, aho, and so it is

I won't be surprised if the actual Palestinian death toll is 5-10 times higher than what's been reported

Alternating between relief and cynicism about the ceasefire. I don't trust that violence is going to stop or even meaningfully change, but it feels like an important political milestone.

Also, I saw videos of joyful Palestinian children celebrating and it broke my heart wide open. We can't fail them.

This article is inspiring! I think it’s more important than ever to remember and act like a better world is possible.

https://peoplesdispatch.org/2025/01/15/100-days-of-claudia-sheinbaum/

“Well, since there is a female president, for the first time, we’re going to recognize the work of Mexican women.”

Cheers erupted when Sheinbaum spoke of advances in the government’s new public health system.

“From February, seniors and people with disabilities will receive a monthly or bi-monthly visit from a healthcare worker to attend to, and prevent illnesses.”

Chants of “Pres-i-denta, Pres-i-denta” rang loud as Sheinbaum also mentioned that the government will be installing public pharmacies next to branches of its public banks, Bancos de Bienestar, so that people can easily access free medicine.

RIP, President Carter. He actually seemed to care about people.

I was so surprised when he lost to Reagan in 1980. (I was 9 and didn't know any Republicans.) What a terrible loss for this country that was.

"Researchers found on an average of 10 months after COVID-19 onset, younger (ages 18-44) and middle-aged (ages 45-64) adults had worse neurologic symptoms of long COVID than adults 65 and older. Symptoms included headache, numbness and tingling, problems with smell and taste, blurred vision, depression, anxiety, insomnia, fatigue and a decrease in cognitive function. These symptoms occurred regardless of if the patient had mild or severe #COVID-19 infections."
