New #insectInsights episode!
I've been wanting to take about diving insects for a while. I have been fascinated with their physical gills for a while. Here's the story of a little Indian bug. Featuring goats!

I'm currently working on a podcast episode celebrating one of the nominees for the New Zealand Bug of the Year 2025 award!
It's a cute event/competition to celebrate New Zealand endemic biodiversity and habitat conservation.
Everyone can vote until the 17th of February

I see a lot of people have ''I don't use #AI '' in their bio or around their work
And I really like this little project that helps you signal it, the ''Human Made'' set of icons/labels, that you can use to put on what you do. It's really cute.

I know I follow a bunch of illustrators focusing specifically on insects/wildlife, but somehow I can't find them right now.
Can you recommend me some? You can definitely recommend yourself if you fit

First time I see the ''winter brunette'' (the translation of the french name that is just to cute not to use) in actual winter. One of the two species (the other in the same genus) to overwinter as an adult.

When I was at the #permacomputing meeting in Vienna the other day, I didn't have anything to say about any ''project'' I had going on
and now I just remember I did implement my website all in html because fuck it, it's all I know and for what I need it's plenty
@freebliss I am a bit late but that would have been my entry :D

New podcast episode!
This one is about some weird genomic stuff people found in caterpillars. Turns out, parasitic wasps are conducting accidental genomic manipulations
Pretty cool if you ask me

I'd like to get the info (in a graph or just series of values) about how long during the year a star is observable, depending on latitude.
Not sure how to do that, or what tool to use. I am pretty sure the math is too difficult for me.
The Star in question is Canopus.
@cosmos4u maybe you know if that's doable or if I just need to get rid of that idea?
It's for a writing project, not very important, I don't actually need it, it would just be very nice.

I mean
The math on the Wikipidaya article simply doesn't work
What do you mean?? Surely a royal gur can't be 300 sila if a sila is 6x6x6 susi, and a Gur is 12x12x1 kus??
Get your qubits in order wikipedia

I have a player who's going to have to translate an Akkadian tablet. The tablets give instructions for something, and including some volume measurements. I am having a lot of fun researching antique measurement systems, for him to have to deal with at some point when he tries to follow the recipe 😁
Thomas, if you're reading it, good luck

I am a bit disappointed. For my last podcast, I wanted to include goat sounds. This story is happening in a very specific ecosystem in Southern India, that has goats. I checked what species of goat were found in the region, and there's an endemic endangered species there that's pretty cool.
But it's a mountain goat and my podcast happens at a much lower elevation than the goats would be found.
So it will be basic goats. Sad.

hey, #scicomm vocabulary question
If I want to talk to a broad audience, would you recommend me to say ''Carbon dioxide'', ''CO2'', or both at the same time to clarify they're the same?
I prefer ''Carbon dioxide'' but I am wondering if everyone easily knows it's CO2.
