Rejecting 'AI' means rejecting 'AI'. Not, "Yeah, AI's bad... Oh look, Deepseek!"

I also love the remark the interviewer makes after Lanier finishes elaborating on that point:

“I’m very concerned about the moronization of America, and I see it promoted in movies. We certainly don’t want that to happen in the computer industry, where the whole point is to use tools to empower us, not to numb us.”

30 years later I read this, and I can't help chuckling bitterly.

I understand the preference of having a 'leading image' that accompanies a blog post, so that when sharing such post on socials, people may look at that image and be more willing to click on your link.

But if you create such image with 'AI' tools, know that — at least with me — this strategy is going to backfire.

I like the expression 'retro-future/retro-futuristic' to describe a certain aesthetic or even fiction setting. But I just thought of 'avant-past' to describe certain aspects of the still-WIP sci-fi novel I'm writing.

TikTok needs to be banned worldwide, if you ask me. Worse than alcohol for brain cells.

I also realised I wrote 'attention spam' instead of 'attention span' in my original toot. Hopefully your brain has autocorrected it! (Though it's a quite interesting typo anyway, given the context...)

We need to read more books. We need to retrain our minds so that we can focus again, follow & form more complex thoughts, and hone critical thinking. The screen-based, fragmented, distraction-full way of absorbing information is destroying our attention spam. 'AI' is making us dumber. Those who control this flow of information and these 'AI' tools know this, and are absolutely happy to have dumber, uncritical people to influence and manipulate.

Read more books.

It's hilarious to see YouTube videos discussing/criticising "2025 trends" — we're only 18 days into 2025! What trends!?

And this arrived today! In a cool soft pouch with three pockets you can use to carry three watches when travelling. It came with the yellow strap as default and the leather 'driving' strap as spare. On the caseback there's an engraving of the Porsche 910, the car that inspired this line of Roue chronographs. One thing I didn't realise is that this is a limited edition watch. As you can see, mine is №139 out of 1000. That's nice!

Today's #watch is another Casio, the Edifice EFV-100, an inexpensive timepiece which definitely punches above its weight. Very well made and with great versatility.

The type of #watch that was missing from my humble little collection was the sports / #chronograph, and there are a bunch of cool, well-made, not super-expensive, retro-inspired candidates out there (Timex Marlin Chronograph, Timex Waterbury Chronograph 41mm w/coloured subdials, Casio Edifice EFB-730D, Citizen Tsuno, Orient Mako Chrono Panda, Glycine Combat Chrono, Seiko Speedtimer, etc.). I wanted something more striking, and settled for this Roue TPS Six. Comes with a yellow strap too! 😍

These are just two videos in my current YouTube recommendations, but scrolling down the page I can see more stuff talking about the negative impact of 'AI' in general.

I don't give a fuck if 'AI' is good at writing that fucking little summary for you, if the bad outweighs the good, you take 'AI' in the backyard and you put it down like the rabid dog it is.

And don't even start singing the Silicon Valley ballad, "It'll get better". Look around you — is there anything getting better today?

I can't decide. I love both colour variants, to be honest. The blue dial variant seems to be the most popular, yet to me the white dial feels more understated and potentially more interesting. There is also a black dial variant, but the red+dark grey 'racer' strip is much more subdued and this makes for a murky, more boring result.

For me, this is the straw that broke the camel's back.

No more money spent for an Apple product until there's some clear sign of a change in stance and direction with Cook's successor. https://mastodon.social/@appleinsider/113766618970266062
