If you need the tl;dr on why Substack is bad here we go:

@anildash did your homework for you about why you shouldn't be on Substack from a principled persepctive: https://www.anildash.com/2024/11/19/dont-call-it-a-substack/

@molly0xfff did the math for you, it is cheaper to be elsewhere: https://www.mollywhite.net/micro/entry/202412171251

Molly also wrote the blueprint on how to get off Substack:

https://www.citationneeded.news/substack-to-self-hosted-ghost/

The folks at Ghost and Buttondown have offered to help you move off Substack - you don't have to go it alone.

Do I just need to schedule a toot everyday to remind people of like 1000 reasons to not use Substack?

I’m very concerned about their mental health if this social outlet is taken away from them and I’m writing ever letter and calling every rep I can.

I do appreciate why this is an issue at the US high school to college level because money becomes entangled in the issue (scholarships) but I’d rather have a discussion about to how handle that then throw the entire concept out.

If anyone is unsure about “trans kids in sports” I’m happy to share my experiences of our non-binary kid participating in high school sports. Being able to participate with the team they most closely identify with has been positively life changing. And their coaches agree, having said to us at the end of season meeting “your kid was absolutely on the right team for them, their teammates were supportive, and they improved personally at a rate faster than their peers on the other team.”

There are technical things like the simple fact Bluesky and Mastodon have different character limits which would influence what a "micro" version of post might look like on either. Then there are the "norms" differences... there's a certain ethos to what gets a “content warning" on friend.camp vs. Bluesky (vs. the norms of whatever Mastodon you are currently on which probably aren't the same as mine.)

Having been on Bluesky for a while now, I still don't fully understand what to post there vs. here (my little corner of Mastodon which is not the same as your little corner of Mastodon unless we are both friend.camp-ers in which case they might be similar.) Ultimately I'd prefer to post stuff to my blog and then syndicate it out to both but that's not nearly as straightforward as it sounds.

This editorial reads like that one person in your high school Honors English class who was a little too excited to shove their thesaurus of the day desk calendar entry into every assignment: https://www.ft.com/content/a46cb128-1f74-4621-ab0b-242a76583105?shareType=nongift

It is amazing that Mark Zuckerberg & Matt Mullenweg will likely still have their jobs at the end of the year. Both seemingly lucked into success & since then have kinda haphazardly run their businesses with no clear strategy.

Facebook in particular has had several disastrous product executions that would have ended most companies.

Automattic's acquisitions have been “good on paper" but have not resulted in any meaningful improvements that "floated all boats" as one would expect.

The other useful thing for a Facebook account has been access to the local “buy nothing” group so I can freecycle things that are perfectly useful but not a good fit for our family.

Likewise it was an excellent tool for local non-profit outreach… but like read this GLAAD press release about Meta’s changes to their moderation policy today: https://glaad.org/releases/meta-removes-anti-lgbtq-hate-speech-policies-ends-fact-checking/

How the hell can you stay active on a place like that?

I’ve held on to my Facebook account so I could access Instagram so I could follow my favorite local restaurant’s menu and hour updates because that’s their “website” but I cannot stomach having a Meta presence anymore.

Here’s hoping I can convince my favorite restaurant to post updates in some other way but I’m guessing I’m just going to have to get used to calling them on the phone a lot.

I would have no idea how to explain the last 72 hours of Elon Musk lore to anyone who is not extremely online in multiple communities.

He was deferred from his early decision choice (Swarthmore) but that news was offset by the fact that his senior class voted him “best date to take home.” Win some, you lose some.

Proud parent moments this week as my kid whose brain hemorrhaged a few years ago has been accepted to the college programs of Lewis & Clark, Reed, and Sarah Lawrence.

Some of those offers came with merit scholarships which is just... I'm floored because I didn't know what his future looked like for a few days and it looks so bright for him now. Say what you will about insurance, his care team has absolutely been the best of the best.

I'm not sure what the dumbest thing I've learned about in the last 24 hours is... that someone spent our limited energy resources on training a "twin towers" LLM chatbot for Instagram (a, last I checked, photo & video social media sharing application?) or that Wingstop recently sold debt-backed futures based on "future wing sales” and that the entire thing sounds like “mortgage backed securities” which did really well IIRC.

It is reminiscent of when Twitter went through (a much longer on-ramp, btw) the shift from hundreds of micro-communities doing their own thing to the entire platform feeling like it is meant to be a breaking news engine first and foremost.

Now that Bluesky has had the explosive growth I'm seeing a lot of long-time users saying “well, this place is not fun anymore" or newer users going “this is not what I expected.” No one seems particularly happy about it.

The feel of the site has completely changed several times over the last... four weeks? Each week there's been a different overall vibe. I don't think any of this is necessarily good or bad, it is just the reality of social platforms changing as the community changes.

If you've not been to the US in the last five years, the overall size, and particularly the height of the average vehicle here, has grown dramatically. Meanwhile our infrastructure and road design policy has barely changed from fifty years ago.
