This post by @genmon resonated: I recently used the AirPod hearing test which showed very low hearing loss on average but definitely a measurable drop on high frequencies. In both cases, it feels like a good opportunity to provide context using all of the other data they have: how does this compare to what's expected of others with your age & similar physical stats?

The massive data center builds in the AI race reminds me of the early years of radio where not having a solid theoretical basis meant people were using enormous amounts of power with hideously inefficient transmitters. https://mas.to/@ReverendMoose/113906092465487450

This kind of perspective should be mandatory for all reporting on #AI environmental costs: yes, we should monitor but the average American would see far greater savings by reducing beef consumption or driving. https://andymasley.substack.com/p/individual-ai-use-is-not-bad-for

“people think the long-in-development ITER fusion reactor will cost between $40bn and $70bn once developed (and it’s shaping up to be a 20-30 year project), so Microsoft is spending more than the sum total of humanity’s biggest fusion bet in one year on AI.”
