Lest we forget, immigrants are right there alongside trans folks as the first groups singled out by the new administration.

I want us to keep that in mind because it informs where we need to tune in and direct our support.

As promised, a blog post on why and HOW I'm leaving Facebook and other Meta services: https://blog.riley.pub/walking-away-from-facebook/

In it, I share the steps I'm taking to unwind my Facebook dependence in an orderly fashion, what alternatives I'm using, and how I'm getting settled in.

I hope someone out there finds it useful.

PS. If you subscribed to my newsletter back in the day: I've merged my blog and newsletter in the course of this migration. I split things too finely before which just introduced more overhead than I could sustain.

Woo! My blog is back up and running at https://blog.riley.pub, and I've got my old posts migrated over.

Now I've got somewhere current to publish my post about why, and more usefully, HOW I'm leaving Facebook :blobcat_bongo:

Not trying to persuade, though it might provide useful talking points for like-minded people, so much as offer some tips for people who don't have as much experience with social network migrations.

Should be live soon!

Just finished reconstituting my data on my new BookWyrm instance over at @robin@books.riley.pub, including my lists of poetry.

If you're interested:

As always, suggestions greatly appreciated! My Indigenous and Disabled Poets lists need a lot of love.

A week ago, most of the people I saw kicking the Facebook habit were either somehow connected to the tech industry, or queer/trans.

Not so today. The circle is expanding.

It may only be a small dent relative to the total user base, but this is how it begins -- and I am so glad to see it.

Realized that, while I came out to my fellow Petaluma General Plan Advisory Committee members at last night's meeting, I didn't actually give them my new pronouns 😂

But I don't mind introducing a little gender ambiguity :sparkles_agender:

Wow. Self hosting Ghost is delightfully simple, especially with the Docker container. Nice change of pace from the last few applications I set up on my new server :blobcat_glasses:

Now it's just down to setting up Matrix and Pixelfed!

Then I'll have functionally replaced my old server, and can begin winding it down. Looking forward to knocking a couple hundred a month off my hosting bills :blobcat_bongo:

Here's just one reason why the work of Petaluma Pride still matters.

How do you feel about the fact that in the United States people with disabilities can be paid a sub-minimum wage?

Today is the last day to submit a comment to the Federal Register asking for an end to this practice. Right now, people who profit off the back of this exploitation are flooding it with comments.

Allies: please don't miss the opportunity to even the score. It takes less than 5 minutes.

Someone caught video and audio of a meteorite striking the ground near their home – very possibly the first such recording ever.

At some point I need to come to terms with the fact that the boycott aspect of @phpledge failed (at least this time around) ...

... but that there's still good work we can do in creating materials and community to help event organizers ship ever better Health & Safety policies and practices.

I also need to be honest with myself about my capacity to push it forward. I'm not giving up but evidence suggests that I probably need someone else to take the lead.

After 5 years of attempting to manage without, I'm returning to Rx to help me manage ADHD and friends.

And unfortunately it appears to be just as much of a pain in the ass to get the necessary support as before :blobcat_notlike:

Huge thanks to @OpenForumEurope and @EclipseFdn for their leadership on the Cyber Resiliency Act.

We at @matrix have had to be laser focused on the UK's Online Safety Act, so it's a relief that, as we emerge from that and start assessing the CRA's impact to our work, there's already a body of expertise for us to draw on.

Great things are possible when FOSS foundations work together!

Blergh. I see I've reached the phase of HRT which has adverse impacts on sleep 🫠 Thankfully, if I understand correctly, this isn't expected to last long.
