If you want to see a short doc in a similar style which tracks through the dictatorship of Mobutu, check out Craig Baldwin's Rocketkitcongokit, from 1986.

Soundtrack to a Coup d'Etat is astounding, a titanic and impressionistic presentation of the Western conspiracy to subvert the independence of the Congo before it even began.

Framed with Khrushchev's speech to the UN, and the deployment of jazz musicians as ambassadors to the country while Black Americans rally to the support of Lumumba, it's a stark reminder of the duplicity of world governments, and a refutation of the dedication of the West to civil liberties.

Happy #LetterboxdFriday !

I held off because I was gonna watch something tonight, but I just crashed, so you get what you get. =P

Love Me was a disappointment, Companion was a surprise, and One of Them Days was exactly what I thought it would be. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

It's gonna be really interesting watching Bill Morrison's "Incident" in a theater with other people when they do that "watch the Oscars shorts in a theater" program in a few weeks.

I REALLY hope they have the wherewithal to put it last. It's so emotionally affecting, such a sickening event, I have no desire to think about anything else afterwards.

My favorite film at my first #NHFF (in 2022) was Disfluency, a nuanced and poignant tale of a woman returning home from school after failing her final class, and her endeavor to not let it define her.

Despite playing festivals since 2021,. it struggled to find distribution.

Well, it finally landed on VOD yesterday. I just rewatched it, and it holds up! I highly recommend it.

Note that its central concern is trauma, how we deal with it, and how others in our lives deal with it.

Happy #LetterboxdFriday , everyone!

Bunch of new releases this week. January's been good so far! Granted, I've mostly been seeing stuff which is finally expanding wide. Maybe the actual 2025 releases are exemplifying the "Dumpuary" trend.

Looks like we're gonna see that Toxic Avenger movie after all! It had played festivals, but was struggling to find distribution, so it was uncertain whether it would ever see the light of day. No date yet, but "later this year".

Happy #LetterboxdFriday !

Yesterday was 3 "new releases", depending on your definition. Sing Sing was astounding, deserving all the praise it's received, and making its absence from the awards conversation all the more disappointing. It would have been in my top ten had I seen it last year.

I also began my Agnes Varda journey! Just off this list was her final film, Varda By Agnes, which was a delight, and did it's job well: getting me super pumped to dig into the rest of her work. =)

FINALLY gonna see Sing Sing on Thursday! =D

I had the chance back in August, but it would have required a 75 minute drive, and I figured it would soon expand closer. Unfortunately for me, A24 employed an unorthodox release strategy, proving me wrong.

I'll be pairing it with two others I'm excited for: Grand Theft Hamlet, and The Room Next Door.

And then a rewatch of The Brutalist in 70 mm on Sunday.

It's gonna be a good week. =)

Union is about the formation of the Amazon Labor Union, following the Staten Island employees who fought tooth and nail to form it against Amazon's ongoing refusal to recognize them.

Despite widespread acclaim, it's yet to be picked up for distribution. So it can be rented directly from the filmmaker's site until Jan 17.

I haven't seen it, so I can't vouch for it. But art seen as dangerous must be viewed as important.

I just encountered the most unexpected use of the Wilhelm Scream: in the track "Keltentrauer" by Heilung, from their 2022 album Drif. It comes around 6:05.
