Current commission: reupholstering ten swivel stools rescued from when TechShop went under, slated to go into a big jewelry workshop across town. These are slightly old pics but I’m now entirely done with the sewing and can focus on stapling the last four chairs. End is in sight!

(I am Not Fast and have been working on them since October)

If anyone in #pittsburgh is generally free Sundays from 10-4 and would like to learn how to use an entire makerspace worth of tools (wood, metal, textiles, lasers, vinyl, jewelry) in exchange for staffing the front desk, hmu: Protohaven is recruiting a new shop tech

welp

started the day with washing a mortar and then rubbing my eyes, forgetting that I had just ground the hottest chiles in the house

ended the day by skewering my finger on the sewing machine

it wasn’t even on, I was just moving fabric around under the presser foot and slipped. punched right through the fingernail

this day is fired

redeeming factor: my fingers are too small for the boring bandages so I got one with rainbows on it

Finished ring! My balance of “make it perfect” vs “don’t be a nuisance” slowly skewed to the right as class wore on, so there are definitely things I’d take more care with next time. But it fits, and it’s comfortable, and will make a good decoy wedding ring so people stop asking why I wear mine on my right instead of my left 🫥

Jewelry soldering is so different from electronics soldering! The only bit that transfers is “solder flows toward heat, so think of pulling instead of pushing”

Today’s adventure: getting cleared on the jewelry equipment and making a ring. Shear, rolling mill, anvils, annealing, pig knuckles, soldering, pickle.

New instance, new #introduction!

Hello I'm Katie, and I like to practice making things. These days most of that goes into volunteering at #protohaven, a maker space in #pittsburgh, PA, where I'm using my comfort in the textiles area to boost me up into everything else (latest discovery: table saws are awesome). Currently in progress: a sheet metal and plasma cutter project to enhance my fabric stash storage; refurbishing a 1912 treadle Singer #sewing machine; and #reupholstering as many shitty techshop drafting/bar stools as I can before my attention span runs out. I'm a garment sewist but I've never really got along with commercial patterns. I live in a house over a hundred twenty years old and enjoy #repair in the spirit of that era. I am beginning to paddle in the #fountainPen pond.

I do a lot of personal recipe development for #vegan #fodmapFriendly dietary restrictions and will often post recipes here. I don't CW food photos but I do hashtag them if you need a wholesale filter.

Past passions have included vegetable gardening, sheep to yarn, plant based dyes, fermented foods, wine and beermaking, acrylic printmaking, nail art, calligraphy, embossing (the kind with the stylus and the kind with the heat gun).

I am constantly listening to #audiobooks, mostly speculative fiction.
