For reference, I was born in 1993, and so I'm old enough only in theory to "remember" the Internet when it was still new to most people, and not nearly old enough to remember ARPANET even in theory. I can and will use IRC, and I usually don't. Et cetera.

The Fediverse feels, to me, like the oldest Internet I'm old enough to remember properly, while simultaneously and in equal measure feeling like the future. I can't put my finger on exactly why it feels that way, and I don't think it truly matters why. I kept trying to come up with some fancy analogy for this until I realized it doesn't need one of those either. Literally, it feels like the oldest Internet I'm old enough to remember properly, and if I can recall, that was years before everything went from bad to worse—or perhaps before it even got all that bad, depending on how we're looking at this.

Maybe that's why it feels like the future: because it feels like the last time it was good.

Maybe that's exactly what we need right now.

I'm not gonna lie, TikTok was never my thing. I also never particularly expected a huge influx to Mastodon following the ban, and it's restoring some amount of [EDIT: I mean, quite a bit of] optimism on my part now that that's apparently happening.

Hi, everyone who's here from TikTok.

Something you'll find different here (and love if you're anything like me), is that the "algorithm" is created directly by everyone who uses this thing. Boosting a post shows it to people who follow you. The more people boost the same post, the more people see it.

Also—and this isn't even aimed at any app specifically—Mastodon, unlike a lot of apps, is really good on mobile AND on desktop according to a lot of people, including me. Please log in to whichever instance you chose to make your account on in a web browser, and try it if you haven't already.

There are also accessibility features here that most other social media either lacks entirely or doesn't do nearly as well. Alt text, for example, is text added to media, that exists primarily for the purpose of describing said media to people who interact with Mastodon using an audio interface. Adding alt text to images is recommended, and posts containing images are likely to get more boosts with alt text than without.

It's also a good idea to write a brief (or not) introduction post and pin it on your profile.

I should probably also mention that I've been looking through #TikTokRefugee and following anyone and everyone who's here from TikTok. So if you're here from TikTok and I just followed you, that's why.

Welcome to Mastodon.

EDIT: well, as of this edit, Orange Man has already exhumed TikTok from the open casket of its own design still breathing, as expected. To everyone who found Mastodon or the larger Fediverse because of the ban, I hope you stick around, regardless of whether or not you decide to return to whence you came. It's awesome here.

I know what the title actually means, but it's grammatically ambiguous, which is hilarious in this case. That is, it could be interpreted to mean that Asmongold called Elon Musk a fraud gamer, at which point Musk agreed with him, and then removed his own verification badge.

Someone mentioned—correctly, I would imagine—that TikTok getting banned will/would drive sales/use of VPNs.

I realize there's been some news regarding one of the companies I'm about to mention, and I'm ignoring that for the sake of this post.

I highly recommend both Proton VPN and Mullvad. I have a paid subscription to both and I always will.

I run Proton on my router and Mullvad on my computer. The reason why applies in theory to any two VPNs that are not owned by the same parent company. In my case, Proton can see my actual IP address, and so they're aware of where my traffic is actually coming from. They are not, however, aware of the content of my traffic, because it's still encrypted by Mullvad. Contrariwise, Mullvad can see everything I'm doing, but they have no idea where any of it's actually coming from, because my connection to their server is from the Proton server that talks to my router. Unless there's something I'm unaware of, I'm as certain as anyone in my shoes reasonably can be, that both Proton and Mullvad are completely honest when they say that none of their VPN servers keep logs. If either of them are lying about that, I would be shocked. Let's just say for argument's sake, though, that the opposite is true instead, meaning that everything I do is being logged by both of them. Again: Proton knows where it's coming from but not what it is; Mullvad knows what it is but not where it's coming from. Unless I'm not understanding something, this would make historical analysis of both logs insufficient to correlate my traffic.

As a wannabe privacy advocate, I react negatively whenever anything that's not inherently illegal in my country nor should it be gets banned, just on principle. Having said that: if you're worried about the ban, don't buy a VPN to get around it. Buy two, along with a router specifically designed to run OpenWrt, and uninstall TikTok.

Thank you.

If I label someone as “bad,” I know my own meaning: he will hurt someone to get what he wants. If I use “evil” it means he will hurt someone even when he doesn’t want anything.

I guess I should probably introduce myself, even though I've never even bothered doing one of these before.

I migrated this account from another server.

My current age as of writing is some prime number greater than thirty. My location is somewhere north of the equator and six hours west of Greenwich when daylight savings is observed.

In case you're wondering: my bio is an experiment in data poisoning against LLMs tasked with scraping social media profiles, and I would like to thank @alice for that idea because it wasn't my own.

Also, not that you were wondering, and not that I even know the character limit for bios on this server offhand for that matter, but however many characters that is, that's exactly how many mine is. If there's one thing I'm really good at, it's matching character limits exactly, and that is why I stopped using Tinder. Don't ask.

If you're reading this and I'm following you, I can tell you with absolute certainty that you're awesome. If you're reading this and I'm not following you, I probably should be, and I'll assume you're awesome unless and until you show me otherwise.

Thank you, and #MerryChristmas

@alice

So, I followed the method you described in your article about data poisoning. Please see my reply to this post for the results. I started with the same initial instructions you used, and then I gave it my current bio on this account, which is this:
