I have read the announcement from Overture Maps Foundation (via https://mapstodon.space/@hareldan/113803094270880994 ), and there's a sentence that bugs me.

«Overture data is built open and free for anyone to use, so we expect many innovative use cases across industries [etc]»

In the Free/Libre/OpenSource world, you don't expect people to use something just because you made it. You can hope people'll use it.

Doing otherwise (as OvMF does) is vain and arrogant.

In more #gleo news today: Stroke offset!

One of these "I had this in the bug tracker for months" features, because line stroke rendering (and the accompanying trigonometry) never fails to produce headaches.

It's been a while since I have done one of those "In today's #gleo news".

So, the boring bit of news is the Circle symbol, which combines fill and stroke in a non-trivial shader, and applies feathering at their threshold. Otherwise, and practically speaking, it's a CircleFill and a CircleStroke put together.

The interesting news is that I bumped Gleo to version 1.0.0 since it's been deployed to production a couple weeks ago without any (reported) issues.

I've been trying to follow on the @openstreetmap outage and, while I agree that the OSMF operates on a «shoestring budget» (I'm a former board member of the OSMF, I did see the numbers myself), we must be aware that this has another implication:

The ratio of "value that OSMF provides to society" to "OSMF budget" is amazing. Astounding. Flabbergasting.

Please keep this in mind next time anyone claims that a privately-owned company is the best way to provide value.
