Wonkette: "Trump announced Friday... new tariffs on goods from Canada, Mexico, & China to go into effect today.... In a quick demo of how much success tariffs bring, US stock indices plunged after the announcement, faster than you can remember that the plural is not “indexes.” The trade war will dope-slap states that voted for Trump - products likely to get hit with retaliatory tariffs include “Florida orange juice, Tennessee whiskey & Kentucky peanut butter.” #uspol #economics

New DNC chair Ken Martin, telling it like it is: "First is to unite. We have to rebuild our coalition. We have to ignore the noise. We have to focus with intensity on the goal ahead, which is winning elections to improve people's lives. Second, we need a go on offense. Trump's first weeks have shown us that what happens when amateur hour meets demolition derby, right?" #uspol

PolitucusUSA: Tennessee Rep Ogles, "was alleged to have committed felonies by filing fraudulent campaign finance reports.

After Trump took office, Ogles introduced a bill that would allow the president to run for an unconstitutional third term, and then, like magic, the federal criminal investigation of the congressman disappeared."

"Democratic state attorneys general & civil rights groups have filed at least 5 lawsuits challenging Trump’s executive order curtailing the right to automatic birthright citizenship... Civil rights & religious groups sued to block Trump administration policies aimed at ramping up deportations &... a coalition of Quaker groups sued to block a new U.S. Department of Homeland Security policy authorizing immigration agents to conduct raids in houses of worship. #uspol #deportation

“The fact that the worst wildfire in Los Angeles history should happen in the dead of winter is another warning of the dangers of climate change. Extreme weather events will continue to happen regularly, and will get worse if we don’t tackle the climate crisis head on,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) warned from the Senate floor, noting that they had just passed “a sweeping disaster aid package precisely for these kinds of emergencies.” #wildfires #climate

Article about nutrition changes in food supply ends: “If there’s a silver lining in this, [corn and legumes] may be the answer to future food security.” I disagree. The silver lining is that MANY of us are capable of growing more than we do, and doing more shopping from local farms that do not use big tractors and heavy chemicals.

There are a lot of covered bridges in western Oregon. A wet, icy bridge is dangerous. Erecting a roof both protects the bridge structure and also helps keep carriages from sliding off into the water. #history #pnw #oregon

This is normally a 2’ deep creek in the river with about a 20’ high island in it. Island is almost covered. Another few feet and it will be over the road, even possibly flooding the covered bridge not far from me. I’ve only seen so much water in December once, and it’s not done raining yet. #flood

Gary Legum on Bird Flu:

"Most symptoms have been limited to trouble breathing and pink eye, both of which can also be caused by a busy weekend in Vegas and clear up quickly.

...61 cases have been reported in humans in Louisiana.

Nonetheless, the CDC has been pushing for more workers in America’s agricultural industry to get this year’s flu vaccine, which would offer some protection against H5N1. Except Louisiana has proscribed itself and its health officials from even mentioning “flu shot.”

There will be food shortages again, so as many of us as possible should plant victory gardens. This is the time of year to order seeds. If you're in PNW, try Siskiyou Seeds, which has a lot of open pollinated but improved locally adapted varieties. https://www.siskiyouseeds.com/collections/squash

Billionaires may not care at all about losing the Affordable Care Act, Social Security, and Medicare. They can buy whatever healthcare they want, even cosmetic procedures for themselves and their wives, and abortions for their girlfriends.

I want to know what billionaires intend to do if the FDIC is dismantled by TFG and we enter another recession. Of course some of their wealth is in shares and property, but they also keep money in banks just like we do. 😡🤬 #uspol

I consider myself a LEFT LIBERTARIAN, but don't use that term much in public since assholes have ruined the term "libertarian." A left libertarian believes each person controls their own bodies, but nature and natural resources cannot be owned, and does not believe a country's government should invade or hold sway over another country's. I recognize this is idealist, but the more people who hold these beliefs, the better off the world will be. #nature #climate #uspol
