Today's "I need to get this out of my head so I can let it go" rambling:
https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/baresip
Debian was packaging 1.0.0 for ages. Before the last distro release (so, about 2 years ago), when faced with removal from the archive because of an aging dependency, they upgraded the package to 1.1.0. Upstream is actively making new releases. They were well into the 2.x series at that time. 3.19.0 is current as of this writing.
I joined the debian-voip IRC channel and inquired about this. They said something to the effect of "sometimes it's better to package something old rather than nothing at all." There was no elaboration on what the conditions surrounding that "sometimes" are. I may have made the mistake of remarking about this being why the moniker "Debian Stale" has come to be. Things went defensive and there was no productive discussion.
While I understand that Debian is a volunteer project, it seems like there ought to be better policies for what software stays in the repositories. Or at least more consistent: Asterisk was removed from bookworm because it wasn't being maintained.
So here we are approaching another freeze window and impending release with no mention of an updated package in the works. I don't have the spoons to go chasing this down again, so I guess I keep running the old version since it does still function.
This is another one of those things that was rattling around in my head, and @bert_hubert 's post about testing with newer software finally nudged me to write it out.

I find it amusing that so much of the sci-fi I grew up on touted touchscreen interfaces, but now that they are so prevalent in this reality I find myself enjoying mechanical interfaces more.

What the heck is going on here?
I upgraded/installed/reinstalled the libvirt-daemon-driver-qemu 11.0.0-1 package on a trixie/testing machine. The contents of the .deb clearly show a /etc/apparmor.d/libvirt/TEMPLATE.qemu , but it's not on the filesystem.
As such I can't create any new VMs.

Dragged myself out to the local library for a change of scenery. No #IPv6 on the WiFi and they're blocking my VPN to try and get it. Good thing I still know enough SSH trickery to get real work done.

I remember hearing about the redis kerfuffle awhile back but didn't really keep up with what was going on beyond the fact that valkey is now a thing.
It looks like valkey is available in bookworm-backports. Does it make sense for me to migrate now before the trixie upgrade later this year?
Continued compatibility with rspamd is my primary requirement.

I am using a Ubiquiti Nanostation AC loco running OpenWRT as my main wireless access point. When I tried to upgrade from 22.03 to 23.05 I got bit by https://github.com/openwrt/openwrt/issues/12882
The good news is https://openwrt.org/releases/24.10/changelog-24.10.0-rc1 lists the commit (f024f4b) fixing the issue. I'm still a bit trepedatious about upgrading once the full release is out, since the only way to recover from the issue is to do the factory firmware recovery procedure and then flash 22.03 back onto it.
If someone else out there is running the same hardware successfully on the new version, I would be grateful for report of such.

Did you see him giving that Nazi salute? Oh, it wasn't a Nazi salute? You're right, he's not a member of the Nazi party. He's a member of the GOP. It was a GOP salute. My apologies for the confusion.

@ntfy Do you have plans to enable #IPv6 on ntfy.sh ? Given it's on DigitalOcean, should be an easy lift.

I just formulated a soundbite that explains why huge long #IPv6 deployment analyses of the type Geoff Huston produces bug me so much:

From https://libvirt.org/news.html :
v11.0.0 (2025-01-15)
New features
network/qemu/lxc: support vlans on standard Linux host bridges
The network, qemu, and lxc drivers now support (using the <vlan> subelement) vlan tagging and trunking on network interfaces connected to a standard Linux host bridge.
I'm looking forward to this making its way into Debian. VLAN support is the main reason I'm using OpenVSwitch in my virtualization environments. Being able to do everything with base OS tools would be fabulous.

I just had a moment of not believing my eyes at first.
The Discord app running on my desktop has a VSZ of 1.2 terabytes.
How is this even a thing? I mean, sure, its RSS is a paltry 562 MB, but still.
