This morning at my local beach. I was too late to catch the gorgeous sunrise, but this view is always interesting to me. Always.

Have you ever had the experience of being away from your #Fediverse account (e.g., #mastodon) for a few days and having a follower or mutual ask about your absence?

(this might only make sense if you've been on the fediverse for at least a couple of months, but answer if you think it's relevant)

Boost for visibility?

The best #ska #meme I personally know. OK, I don't know many ska memes. This might be the only one. But I love it.

The Mustard Plug is the band I wished Mighty Mighty Bosstones could be*. I heard their insane/amazing/perfect cover of The Freshman on late-night radio in #ColumbusOhio in the late #90s on our excellent (now dead) radio station #CD101. Every once in a while I just dial up a Mustard Plug song and wish I was at a concert in the 90s banging my head with the actual #ska fans.

If you ever thought that this ultra-emo tune by the Verve Pipe wouldn't work as an angry, driving #ska tune, you were mistaken.

Remembering when I lived in #SouthTexas a friend's little boy (about age 6?) was singing a religious song but got one word wrong. It should have been "homeless" but he walked around the house singing,

"We are not Gómez, Gómez, like the Christ child was..."

We already know his middle initial was H. and now we know he was Jesus H. C. Gómez.

General "what I'm doing" post.

Making a sled. We have lots of snow. I bought a cheap whitewater #kayak last year and finally got around to committing crimes against paddlesports.

Next:

  1. Steering/brakes

  1. Soften the coaming (i.e. edge)

  1. Reattach the seat?

Q4: Are there any new making or crafting skills you are hoping, or would like, to learn or try this year (or in the near future)?

  1. #Welding. I did oxy-acetylene welding in high school and nothing since. I frequently have projects that would benefit from welding.

  1. #Casting (i.e., metal). I'd like to create a tiny forge for casting aluminum parts. I've seen How-Tos for this online, but haven't dived in, yet.

Q2. What new skills have you learned recently? Was there one which you thought would be really hard, but surprised yourself when you found you could do it?

I'll go with slightly less recent (3-4 years ago): I learned I could make geodesic domes. It's multiple little skills instead of one big one, but it has been an absolute delight.

Q1: ...what you have made or created differently, with alternative, new, or infrequently used, skills?

I'm a middle-aged person in the rural northeast US (currently). It seems like many things I've done have involved new skills; I enjoy trying new things (not always perfecting them, though).

Epoxy resin is a material I've had to learn some skills with. I've used it to coat #3dprinting objects (diluted with denatured alcohol it's cheaper than commercial smoothing agents), seat beach/sea glass in mosaics, repair various things, create various decorative items (often combined with a drop or two of alcohol ink), coat the surface of a play/work table, etc.

I also used it to make a "book safe": I removed the spine and covers of the book, dipped all the pages in thinned bartop #epoxy #resin, then clamped the pages all shut for a few days while the resin cured. After that, a drill and coping saw were all I needed to cut out the middle "hidden compartment" part. I glued the covers & spine back on, and the results were fairly nice. The advantages of using resin over glue included (1) not spending hours gluing all the pages and (2) working with the combined pages as if they were a solid block of plastic-wood, instead of hobby-knife cutting through layer after layer.

I was trying to arrange these from lighter to darker, but I couldn't decide how to define that: thematically? musically? Anyway, it's five songs. About light. Arguably.

Bumper-sticker academic moment

"Women in the audience... the time in your life when you have the highest probability of being murdered is when a man looks at you and says, 'What? You don't love me?'"

-- David Buss, circa 2010, summarizing his research on murder

(Notes: IIRC Buss reported that >95% of all murders were about "reproductive uncertainty," not money or power or status or grandpa's will. Men get murdered, too, at much higher rates, and most of those are about sex/reproduction/relationships, too. If you're an American woman you still don't have a very high absolute likelihood of being murdered, but murders of women are almost all because someone is upset about #sex/#reproduction/#relationships. Most often, within that category, it is the person the woman just broke up with, told to go away, etc.)
