TIL "poometry". Measuring the concentration of poo in a soil sample. Maybe archeology slang? Maybe used more widely?

Haute couture on the cat walk.

Someone had a hysterektomi. The sausage skin is to prevent her from licking the scar until it has healed.

What a strange thing to watch in a movie theatre. I liked it a lot.

What on earth did I just watch?

The link is a teaser. You have to pay to watch the full film. It's well worth it.

A crazy 1930s cartoon mashup, but with actors in silly costumes and very lo-fi effects.

Last @kevlin of 2024?

Machine to buy smokes from, in the grocery store, has more important things on its mind than serving customers.

This took some time to figure out.

template

struct L {};

using F = L<[]{}>;

F func();

int main()

{

func();

}

Clang warns that "func" has internal linkage, but is not defined.

I guess this is because the signature requires knowledge of a type that is only knowable in the current translation unit (the type of the lambda).

It feels like it's too soon, but these two marauders, aged 4- and 5- m.o., desperately needed a new home immediately.

They have two modes of being. Cuddly, or playing at being 70s rock stars trashing the place.

I wonder if I'll get my NDC hoodie back, and if it'll be wearable still.

I've never used the alternative long-form bit-arithmetic names and_eq, or_eq and xor_eq in C++, and it just occurred to me that they are named wrong. They are alternative spellings for bit-arithmetic assignment operators &=, |= and ^=. Assignment, not equality.

I don't really think that this causes any problem, but it's curious, isn't it? Naming is hard.

Suovas, a traditional Sami way of preparing and conserving reindeer meat.

I choose to make it simple, cut in thin slices, fry up in butter with salt and pepper, and add cream.

The sauce is a thick broth with glüwein, juniper berries, bay leaf, a dash of puréed tomatoes and... butter.

Serve with mashed potatoes for even more butter; don't want to be sub-average with the weight gain.

If you don't get presents, it may be because I ate the reindeer. Sorry.

Recently discovered, and currently binge watching, Elle Cordova on YT. She's absolutely brilliant, and right now a very welcome distraction.

🤔

Software development has been my profession for more than 30 years now.

I continuously learn and improve. While the software I wrote 10 or more years ago is still valuable, it's not great by my standards today.

Most of all software I've written over the years is still used in production.

Ergo, most of everything I've ever written is not very good.

(Or maybe that's unfair. It's still there, so obviously it's good enough and fit for purpose, even though I feel super uncomfortable about it)

Two weeks off now.

The last two things I did at work was to automate a basic system level test suite on all PRs and builds on main, and a set of trivial code detail improvements. The latter failed the first. I think I deserve a gold star for that.

One of my favourite questions to a call-in science radio show was "did dinosaurs evolve into birds before they became extinct or after?"

The reason I like it so much was not the question, but how the host responded. The "duh, after extinction there'd be nothing left to evolve", was quite obvious, but he didn't go there. He expanded on the evolutionary tree and explained how birds came to be, and how the question was kind-of off, without humiliating the person who asked.

I like that.

Back to dabbling with TypeScript again. I'm really not good. I never used it much, but after a few months I felt comfortable enough to do most work without constantly having to look everything up. That was half a year ago. Now it's back to web search driven development again. It's slow.
