Posting this here because it appears to have been removed from the #CDC website?!?! Support #PublicHealth !!

Don’t believe #RFK & #Trump #Lies !!

=> =============

MMWR April 2, 1999 (edited for clarity)

These achievements are astounding and should be celebrated! πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ’•

Ten Great Public Health Achievements β€” 1900-1999

[#]Vaccination resulting in the eradication of smallpox; elimination of poliomyelitis in the Americas; and control of measles, rubella, tetanus, diphtheria, Haemophilus influenzae Type B, and other infectious diseases in the United States and other parts of the world.

Control of Infectious Diseases resulting from #cleanwater and improved sanitation. Infections such as typhoid and cholera, a major cause of #illness and #death early in the 20th century, have been reduced dramatically. In addition, the discovery of antimicrobial therapy has been critical to successful public health efforts to control infections such as tuberculosis and sexually transmitted diseases.

Safer and Healthier #Foods have resulted from decreases in microbial contamination and increases in nutritional content. Identifying essential micronutrients and establishing food-fortification programs have almost eliminated major nutritional deficiency diseases such as rickets, goiter, and pellagra in the United States.

Healthier #Mothers and #Babies have resulted from better hygiene and #nutrition, availability of antibiotics, greater access to health care, and technologic advances in maternal and neonatal medicine. Since 1900, infant mortality has decreased 90%, and maternal mortality has decreased 99%.

[#]FamilyPlanning has provided health benefits such as smaller family size and longer interval between the birth of children; increased opportunities for preconceptional counseling and screening; fewer infant, child, and maternal deaths; and the use of barrier contraceptives to prevent pregnancy and transmission of human immunodeficiency virus and other STDs.

Control of Risk Factors for #HeartDisease and #Stroke such as #smoking and high blood pressure. Since 1972, death rates for coronary heart disease have decreased 51%.

Recognition of #Tobacco Use as a Health Hazard; since the 1964 Surgeon General's report on the health risks of smoking, the prevalence of smoking among adults has decreased, and millions of smoking-related deaths have been prevented.

Motor-Vehicle Safety improvements have resulted from engineering efforts to make both #vehicles and #highways safer and from successful efforts to change personal behavior (e.g., increased use of safety belts, child safety seats, and motorcycle helmets and decreased drinking and driving).

Safer #Workplaces work-related health problems, such as coal workers' pneumoconiosis (black lung), and silicosis (common at the beginning of the century) have come under better control. Severe injuries and deaths related to mining, manufacturing, construction, and transportation have also decreased. Since 1980, safer workplaces have resulted in a reduction of approximately 40% in the rate of fatal occupational injuries.

[#]Fluoridation of Drinking Water began in 1945 and in 1999 reaches an estimated 144 million persons in the United States. It safely and inexpensively benefits both children and adults by effectively preventing tooth decay, regardless of socioeconomic status or access to care.

Mind blowing #immunology fact!

We now know that the body's first responders (#Neutrophils) have a multi-pronged attack, and when all else fails they turn into little suicide bombers--spewing out their own #DNA as a microscopic #net to catch and kill #bacteria! πŸ™€

Somebody was cute and named these "Neutrophil Extracellular Traps" or NETs for short. πŸ™‚

This photo is from a medical journal and is credited to Dr Volker Brinkmann, Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology, Berlin, Germany. Amazing!! πŸ‘ πŸ‘

There may be a trend to "shut down #FEMA" and letting US #States "fend for themselves" when #disaster strikes. To frame this properly you have to keep in mind a map like this (about ten years old now, from The Economist). The darker orange states take IN way more than they send to the Feds. The green states PAY way more than they get back. So #Mississippi, #WestVirgina, & #NewMexico will be in big trouble!

If you hold with that logic, then average the total payments back to the States and send only that amount (per capita) back every year!

After discussing the weather and fires on both coasts with my siblings, someone said "Welcome to #Hell"... which put me in mind of #Dante 's description of the nefarious place. (It does indeed have both fiery and icy zones FYI.)

I've collected several maps of the #Inferno from old books over the years. One of them reminded me of an intake form... and that lead to thinking about #Trump 's eventual exit interview!

It turned out to be a great exercise! He hits almost all the marks! It is truly impressive how one man could do all these bad things in one lifetime?! There are ONLY TWO left unchecked: Suicide and Astrologer. Welcome to the #Kakistocracy!

I give you Trump's Intake Form from Hell (apologies to Dante)...

Talk about meaningless attention to detail, but also aesthetically pleasing...

At some point the #iPhone weather app got rain drops falling on and dripping down the face of it's #UI widgets! My screen shot is static, but these drops are flowing downward as if they are on a piece of glass.

Quite a few #CPU cycles spent on this effect!

Great article about #Chickadees sent to me by a friend...

A Black-Capped Brain

https://drydenwire.com/news/natural-connections-a-black-capped-brain/

This is incredible! ...

"Chickadees cache as many as one hundred thousand food items per year...To support such an incredible memory, chickadees grow 30 percent more neurons in the fall when caching behavior peaks. Then, as they empty out their cache locations, the neurons encoding that information wither away, and their brain shrinks toward spring. The title of a 2014 article by Kozlovsky, et. al. says it all: β€œChickadees with bigger brains have smaller digestive tracts.” Chickadees, especially ones who live in the coldest and most variable habitats, have figured out how to eat smarter, not bigger. That could easily be my New Year’s resolution."

My friend sent me this screen shot (from NYT I think). Here is my reply...

I basically disagree.

People are people and we are all susceptible to bad ideas and bad actions.

That said, I see no reason to agree with or affirm any of their BS.

If they can't agree to disagree agreeably that's on them!

When they're argumentative it's a sure sign they KNOW deep down that they're wrong.

Resist with compassion for those who have been harmed by our toxic politics.

Funny of the day...

[#]Eelpout Festival in Walker, #Minnesota in 2015

For the uninitiated, there is a real sport called #Curling. Usually played with large rocks, not #fish!

And Eelpout are real fish!

Missed the better shot with both birds...

Male and female red-shouldered #hawks together on a wire. Male flew off before I could get the shot.

What you would have seen is that the female is discernibly larger than the male (as is typical for birds of prey). This is the female a bit puffed up because it was a cold morning.

They make a nice couple based on their calls to each other throughout the day! πŸ™‚

Just finished this #book, and learned something very interesting and not very well known...

The #dinosaurs became dominant after two #MassExtinction events (the first was the big one at the end of the Permian).

During this period, the #oxygen levels in the #atmosphere were much less. The dinos already had "bird-like" respiratory systems (with air sacks, little or no dead space) so they could run, etc. faster and longer than the non-dino species.

Just another way modern #birds are living dinosaurs!

These super-efficient respiratory systems are one of the adaptations that make flight possible!
