Bah humbug. I have burned the fingers of my right hand. I'm making no-knead bread in a dutch oven. i preheated the pot to 450ºF, took the cover off, put the dough in, and absent-mindedly grabbed the lid with my bare hand.

Last Sunday, our pet mama rat and almost her entire litter unexpectedly died. We don’t know what killed them, so I had to disinfect the cage they were in. I don’t have the alcohol-based disinfectant we would ideally use, so everything is being scrubbed with this rye whiskey someone gave me which is a little too harsh for my tastes.

I've been back on a Prokofiev symphony binge. He depends quite a bit on muted trumpet. It got me wondering when the muted trumpet began to be used in orchestral music. It turns out that trumpet mutes were invented in the Baroque period! But their use for purposes of altering timbre rather than volume seems to be a 20th century thing. Anyone have any counterexamples?

I have been feeling real overwhelm because of the dreadful state of the house. I’m too young to really remember the Carter presidency. He was elected when I was in first grade and living outside the USA. Plus my family were die-hard Republicans. I vaguely remember the Iran hostages — I read about them in the international edition of Time magazine.
But it’s what Carter did after his presidency that has made the most difference in the lives of individuals. As a Christian, I believe I will be called to account for why I did not serve the needy as he did.
