Admittedly I did cheat and replace the 5,400 RPM hard drive with a 1TB SSD. I'm not masochistic enough for that, particularly when I had something exponentially better on hand. 😆

Just updated my kickass laptop to #FreeBSD 14.2. The upgrade was smooth as per usual.
Downloading the updates took a while since this laptop has a 100mb NIC. This ancient system has a dual core Centrino and a couple GB of RAM. FreeBSD runs quite nicely on it.
Amusingly, however, neofetch still reports I am running 14.1 and uname -a reports the correct version. Hmmm. 🤔

Today I learned there are CIS Benchmarks for #FreeBSD 14. Awesome to finally see updated benchmarks! The previous published ones were at least a decade old.
As I am reviewing the docs, the filesystem, partitioning, and permission recommendations aren't too different from #Linux hardening recommendations. But the kernel and firewall settings are where things start to get more interesting!
This is definitely a great way to learn an OS.

This incredibly flexible and robust tool lets you forward texts, RCS chats, and other message types based on rule sets and variables to other destinations beyond another phone number. Each rule can be independently enabled/disabled.
This app has been indispensable at configuring a smoother experience for using two devices while simultaneously setting healthy boundaries.

1/ A month ago today I bought a flip phone. Originally intended as an emergency device (especially during foul weather). Forwarded calls and texts to the new phone. The results are in: less anxiety and stress, more present and engaged during social interactions, increased focus overall, nearly apathetic to social media, decreased FOMO, decreased less neck/back pain.
This net win was genuinely unexpected! My #smartphone is only for #mfa #signalapp #osmand and #strava.

[#]massachusetts has been experiencing a severe drought for months now. The state has been experiencing a higher than average brush fire season. Fires have been breaking out at an unprecedented rate. Due to the lack of rain, there is no end in sight.
Last Friday, a large brush fire started in the #LynnWoods Reservation, burning hundreds of acres. Thick smoke blanketed the area and neighboring cities #SalemMA and #PeabodyMA. Yesterday, my car was covered in ash.
