Thursday Things
My winter indoor garden really helps cheer and 'ground' (!) me. We get dwarf Bok Choy, mustards, arugula and mini lettuces to supplement our salads of raw local red and green cabbage, carrots, apples and home baked beans Just seeing the growth and tending to the seedlings and growing plants, then snipping the leaves when they're ready helps defeat the winter blues. I have to try to pace the sowings so that the harvests don't all come at once.

On a lighter note (let's face it - almost anything is lighter...). But not any less shocking...
This photo of a mouse was taken by a friend, in the cafeteria of the main hospital in Halifax, Canada! *
More mice were apparently spotted by this friend at the emergency dept in the Infirmary.
This is the same hospital where patients are advised against drinking or brushing teeth etc in water from the tap. The pipes are contaminated with Legionella.
And the same one where patients are practically suffocating in summer heat as they can't put air conditioners on the floors due to concerns over air quality.

I guess we should be grateful that Steven didn't come down with some disease from his two recent eye surgeries. And we are.

Weather. Is now a status in parcel tracking.
In this case, the weather was a dump of snow and high winds.
I've never seen Weather as a status on a tracking page.
I know it's not only in Canada... but I did think it was funny.
Have a great day, friends.

A propos of nothing, but why would people produce 2 movies that were so similar in theme as The Last Bus and The Last Rifleman?
But also, why would we happen to watch them one after the other? (Not the same day.)
Also we had decided not to watch any more "really really old people struggle against all odds to achieve one final important thing" movies after The Last Bus. So why do we end up watching the same thing again? That last one was a rhetorical question.
Just wondering. Have a good day, friends.

Someone asked what Canadian products we all like and apart from the usual supporting local farmers and eating as much in season as we can, there are a couple of green Canadian companies we are particularly impressed with:
For toothbrushes with recyclable heads (they recycle them for you) we love Nada. They make really high quality products.
This link would get you 25% off your order (and get me 4 free heads!)
https://nadatoothbrush.refr.cc/refer/u/lynellenk?s=sp&t=cp
(Confession: if you do go to that link, it mentions Lynellen. That's my real name. Just so you know.)
Also I use and love laundry strips from TruEarth

So Meta is getting creative with links to the fediverse posted on IG.
This was the link I sent in a private message on Instagram:
https://zeroes.ca/@elliek/113880347422611292
This screenshot showing an Instagram profile of someone called ellie k is where that link led.
So effectively access to my Mastodon post was blocked. Thanks Meta.

That's it. The end of an era.
After over 40 years of working partnership with @StevenKennard , I have today (as of December 31 2024) closed our business.
We were put out of business partly by COVID but mostly by the greed of the insurance company. Well now they don't get any business insurance from us, thanks to their avarice.
But it's a strange feeling. A bit sad.
But no more GST/HST returns to submit! No more vehicle mileage book to fill in on every trip in the car. No more ... any of it! Free!

Delicious lunch! Sorry, no photo. No #recipe needed, it's super easy and quick.
Hummus crusted cauliflower bites and sweet potato (air fried), plus steamed red kale and butternut squash. Add in an Italian field roast (or other plant based) sausage to the air fryer or oven and you have a feast!
Bon appétit!

Hi all!
So here we are in the cold, really keen to ride our bikes, but we both suffer from cold hands, so we're stuck. Hand warmers are great for walks, but obviously won't work on a bike.
What do you hardy winter cyclists do to keep your hands from freezing?

I just finished listening to an audio book read by Tom Hanks and I never want to hear another book that is NOT read by him! He's brilliant. Even when he announces a new chapter or part, he brings every word to life! Brilliant!
A reviewer on Goodreads said this:
"TOM HANKS was FLAWLESS in reading this novel. Man, he made this book come alive!!!
Tom was so darn good - it was easy to be fooled that he was reading his own memoir.
Mixing a gifted author with the enormously talented actor, is like finding a FRUIT LOOP in a bowl of CHEERIOS.....( Danny did eat Cheerios for breakfast in this story)."
Although I found the book drifted a bit towards the end, the reading made it compulsive listening and I wouldn't have stopped for the world.
The book (give it a listen) was The Dutch House by Ann Patchett.

Both Steven and I got this message today at different times.
There's no way to even find out who that deleted account was, as far as we can see. But the recommendation is that we invite them to Signal.

It's a small miracle. He hasn't seen this well in 50 years.
It's not what we expected at all. He thought he wouldn't be able to see properly without rigid gas permeable lenses being fitted in about 4 weeks. If you know the condition #keratoconus then you'll understand why it's been so bad.
This surgeon has performed a small miracle and I could tell by the little smile on his face that he was really pleased with his work.
In 4 weeks they'll reassess, but he's actually driving bare eyed for the first time since he was 18! (Such a relief that I won't have to drive everywhere.)

Hospital wait for Steven's eye surgery to be over.
To pass the time I walk. But to take a break from the mask I go outside and there I have to dance to j keep warm.
Patient is out ready to go back to where we're staying.
