The repair guy came, and the car is out of the garage. It’s a two-spring system; and, like car tires, they recommend you replace them in pairs. Cha-ching. Also, like an idiot, I left the tall ladder set up on the garage, and when we pulled the door up, rather than knock the ladder over, it wedged itself on top the ladder, bending the panel and breaking the glass. Cha-cha-ching. The repair guy isn’t going to charge for the labor to replace the panel and glass. But if I need a 3rd thing to go wrong today in order to round out the set, there it is.

Parts are now on order.

On Sunday night, I was sitting in the room above the garage, and I heard a loud bang and felt the floor shake. I walked all over the house, trying to figure out what it could have been, but nothing looked out of place. And then Monday, the garage door wouldn’t open. The motor tried, and the door started to lift, and then nothing. I tried to lift it manually, but it wouldn’t budge. Pretty sure the spring is busted.

In the meantime, we can’t get the car out of the garage. So, finding someone to repair it is on the list for today.

I received boxes of Tunnock’s tea cakes and snow balls as part of my secret Santa gift last week in Glasgow. And they are disgusting. I mean, if I am going to drive myself to diabetes, it should be worthy of the sacrifice. How do I offload these? Give them to someone I don’t like?

I dropped off a rag mop at the groomer’s, and this little fluffer nutter emerged. She has her fleece jacket on because she is now a bit too naked for a snow day.

Went slow and made it, but it’s foggy and the roads are snow-packed. Not too many cars on the road and most were well-behaved.

Saw a pick-up truck with a big advertisement for something that read like “Project 1876”. I may have got that wrong, and it probably has no relationship to the other project named after a year. But any branding based on a year should probably rethink that choice now. Especially a year that harkens back to the good old days when white settlers were committing genocide of native peoples on this land. (It is probably meant to celebrate the year that Colorado was admitted as state in the USA.)

Anyway, I’m hanging out at nearby breakfast place until Suki is ready. Hopefully, the fog lifts and the roads get cleared before I have to get back out there.

Last week’s grooming appointment for Suki (dog) had to be rescheduled due to a snow storm. It is scheduled for this morning. And it is snowing—two inches and counting. And I do not like driving.

Future me would like to live in a place with well-connected, highly available public transportation that accepts dogs.

When I walked back into town, I matched the street signs at a major intersection with the wrong streets, and then wandered wayyyy off track. I didn’t have a data plan or a map with me. But no worry, I felt safe and could spot the tall tower of Hallgrimskirkja to get oriented again.

Two and a half miles later, I went straight to a bar that specializes in gin and said, “I like gin. Make me something please.” The alchemist behind the bar tried to get specifics out of me. But I did not have the energy to make decisions and assured him that I would be happy with anything he created. He did some mixing and shaking and singe-ing of a rosemary sprig. And this emerged.

He later showed me all of the ingredients and said that it was fun for him because it’s rare that someone gives him full reign to concoct.

Yesterday, I wandered into a sound bath. Actually, it was the museum of the life work and former studio of Ásmundur Sveinsson. The main space is a dome with attached extensions, making sound travel in a way that feels very intimate. There were maybe 4 museum goers wandering around, accompanied by ~8 people improvising on wooden flutes. It wasn’t a concert. There were simply there to create sound and listen to each other in this beautiful space. It was really something.

The pictures are only of the outside. Using a camera inside didn’t feel respectful to the vulnerability and spontaneity of the flutists or to private experiences in a communal space.

The aurora chasing excursion was cancelled due to unfavorable conditions. Which means I can go to bed at a civilized hour. Yay me for staying awake all the way until 9 PM (15 and a half hours since the plane landed). I packed a lot in today.

Thanks for the recommendation to bring my big coat, @samerfarha . The wind warranted it today. Even so, with the right gear, the Reykjavik weather was totally doable. I walked a whole week’s worth of steps in one day. (Partly due to going off plan and then getting lost, but no regrets.)

In this morning’s just-before-waking dream, I flushed a toilet and small hoses sprung leaks from odd places (the wall, an adjacent fixture). The bathroom (and toilet) was modern, and yet stuff was already breaking. It wasn’t a catastrophic mess—the water was clean—but it was beyond my repair abilities. The feelings were of dismay at the surprising and unfortunate interconnectedness of things that weren’t obviously connected, exasperation about the never-ending fight against entropy, and my inadequacy to keep up with it all.

T-minus 6 days until inauguration.
