“HyperNormalisation” is a word coined by Alexei Yurchak, a Russian anthropologist, who wrote about what it was like to live in the last years of the Soviet Union.
He described the phenomenon he observed in the last years whereby everyone, from top to the bottom, knew things weren't working and in a variety of respects, e.g. corruption, yet nobody could imagine an alternative vision. So, despite everyone knowing things were broken, people, politicians and institutions alike just plodded on with the status quo, accepting everything as normal.
The sense of disconnect Americans are experiencing recently is likewise hypernormalisation, and, despite the evidence of their own eyes, they continue with the collective pretence of having a functioning society.
Adam Curtis, the British filmmaker, made an excellent, albeit long documentary about this phenomenon

Is anyone else experiencing a certain sense of unreality about what is unfolding globally, presently?
I've been "collapse aware" since about 1996, which was also the year I went vegan. As such, I've always paid attention to small signs of collapse around me. From my perspective, the degradation has really began begun to accelerate recently, be it in terms of the climate and broader environment, or society generally.
Recently everything has felt apocalyptic, quite literally and without hyperbole.
If everything around us isn't burning to a cinder, it's pestilence or war dominating the headlines. And because everyone is so overworked and stressed, which is deliberate, they simply don't have the bandwith to register that this is looking ominously like the end times.
The game feels utterly rigged, especially with regard to elites hoovering up greater and greater shares of the wealth. At what point does the inequality simply become too much for people? Most are already buckling because of a skyrocketing cost of living, not to mention many are carrying significant debt.
Likewise, there are appear no viable political solutions open to regular people. The Right took over what passed for the Left way back in the 1960s, and it's all been neoliberal pantomime since. We've been carefully fed the illusion that we have some choice and actual agency.
It really makes no difference to the average person whether it's the Right or Left boot that's on your neck.
People are so detached this carnage has become all but totally normalised. We're unaware of our predicament, like the frogs in the proverbial pot of boiling water.
And I genuinely understand why people feel apathetic, paralysed and generally numb

Do we really have faith that somebody like Musk won't, ultimately, explore simply murdering the rest of us, i.e. "scheduled rapid depopulation"?
Oligarchs and other elites know climate collapse, in some form, is unavoidable at this point. Reducing the global population to a few hundred million might be an appealing solution to a megalomaniac devoid of principles.
They'd probably just release some sort of ultra-lethal virus, and inoculate the chosen few million Dark MAGA followers.
I'm just spit-balling here about what Bond villain character arc Musk is actually going to follow, because he presently looks to be on a Moonraker trajectory

Corporations and oligarchs are buying everything up, including things like housing, i.e. a necessity of life. The end goal is a situation whereby elite interests own literally everything.
They will then continue jacking up the prices and workers will be left with no choice but to rent from them at exorbitant cost. Even more of the wealth will flow upwards. And there's disgusting disparity in the system already.
This is technofeudalism.
Things need to get guillotiney

Oligarchs are perfectly aware that climate collapse is here, with all the chaos that will bring, hence they are now working together to cement their power

Part of the reason oligarchs have decided to make their move now is that they've finished building their panopticon for the rest of us.
A panopticon is a prison design proposed by Jeremy Bentham that features a central guard tower which all the prisoners can see, even though they cannot see the guards inside. The idea is that this will promote self surveillance, since prisoners never know whether they are being watched or not, e.g. if the guards happen to be on break. Thus, the incarcerated population will be "better behaved" at all times.
Oligarchs now have the ability to keep us sufficiently surveilled, divided, exhausted, stressed, and addicted in order to control us completely. And we should be very afraid of that

The powerful techbro class, typified in Musk, have a nefarious agenda, specifically they've been working together to shred US democracy and in its place establish an authoritarian oligarchy.
That is to say, the West is inching toward a sort of neofeudalism, with extreme wealth concentration and rule by a small elite, with most people being relegated to a precarious serf status
