Don't get me wrong, I have a tonne of respect for my friends at AMD, but god I wish the company would stop farting around with trying to make "special sauce", vendor-optimised builds of scientific software; it just doesn't work. Domain-specific knowledge (in this case, how to make molecular dynamics go fast) is incredibly important and you just can't beat an open standard with a bunch of nerds (complementary) behind it

Also, I finally built the upstream distribution's GPU-accelerated build, which uses SYCL, and I am extremely impressed! Comparing it to the official, AMD "vendor optimised" port (which uses AMD's "cuda with the serial numbers filed off" API) and there's just no competition; the open-source SYCL version absolutely blows the vendor one out of the water. I was actually really surprised to see how much faster it is for realistic MD calculations, especially when we start scaling out to multiple GPUs in parallel

Shoutout to GROMACS for putting in the effort to make an actually pleasant developer experience: it uses nice, modern software engineering practices (despite being actually reasonably old), has a well-thought out and actually functional build system and actually incredible documentation. It's just nice, Emily can have nice things occasionally, as a treat
