"...as long-run inequality trends are crucially shaped by institutions, it follows that they are crucially influenced by the human agency which shaped those institutions in time"

Wars and plagues are not necessarily enough to level inequality. But they are the only way around doing the hard institutional work. And they are not a fun alternative.
