I've been making "pumpkin" breads and muffins for years to make use of the abundant butternut #squash we get from our #garden. We got curious how different it is from the ubiquitous canned pumpkin so I did a side-by-side comparison baking two batches of mini pumpkin chocolate chip loaves. Turns out we could hardly tell them apart, probably due to the spices and chips. Oddly, the canned pumpkin made one more loaf than the squash despite being the same volume of ingredient. #baking #food

Just put away the front entrance fountain and emptied and stored the large flower pots on the deck. To be honest I’m ready to be done straddling seasons and get into the groove of just one. Especially the #baking part. 😁 #fall #autumn #transitions #gardening

This year I planted a milpa-inspired bed with #squash #beans and #sorghum in place of #corn / #maize.

Everything grew great! The weird thing, however, was that the beans did not flower. At all. Until after the fall equinox when it was too late for them to mature pods. I planted Frijol Negro Santanero from Rancho Gordo that were grown in #Oaxaca. Turns out, much to my surprise, common beans can be day-length sensitive! I live too far north for this tropical variety.

Sadly, the little thing started to emerge last evening. I say sadly because normally Monarchs emerge and begin their migration about a month ago. This one would have had that much less time to fly all the way tot he mountains of #Michoacan in #Mexico to spend the winter. Even worse, it's been out of the chrysalis for hours now and its wings are showing no signs of expansion. I'm afraid this little visitor won't be with us much longer. 😔

The strangest thing happened. We picked a bunch of our pinto and black beans the other day and I spread the pods in trays in the garage to dry further before shelling them. I went out the next day and spotted a bright green #Monarch #butterfly chrysalis on one of the pods! We didn't notice it when picking and it was right on top of the heap. It must have come in with the pods and survived the rough handling because the next day it was becoming transparent in preparation for eclosure.
