I am grateful for my Kobo.

Space is at a premium, with the small human needing more of it and having an only growing library of their own books.

Parting ways with what remains of my already well reduced physical book collection is a necessity greatly eased by having digital copies of every single one on the Kobo.

All the arguments for physical books I completely agree with, but the convenience and flexibility of the Kobo means I actually read much more digitally anyway ^_^

While Facebook and others also grab way too much data they’re not quite to the same level as TikTok but critically aren’t funnelling that juice cross-referencable intel off to a foreign power with questionable intent.

Doesn’t make it right that Meta does it on-shore at ALL but I get the concern at a governmental level.

On the imminent US ban on TikTok:

Folk are calling it an attack on freedom of expression. I’m not sure that’s the case. US citizens can still express how they like on a myriad of other platforms.

I lean toward distrust of governments when it comes to legislation concerning tech but the “national security” angle isn’t entirely unreasonable. TikTok extracts a TERRIFYING volume of entirely unrelated data from users’ devices & it’s alarming for fans of the platform just hand wave that away.

Downloaded my Facebook data. Doesn’t seem to include any posts from the last 2-3 years.

Eh.. haven’t posted anything important there in that time but does suck that they appear to be lying to users about giving them their complete data.

Not that I’m shocked.

I really wish Signal had a way to export chats like I can with WhatsApp.

I’ve got an archive of old WhatsApp chats with some poignant moments and sound clips of loved ones no longer here that I treasure.

I get messaging should be ephemeral but the archivist in me would really like to be able to save the odd one.

That and having sensible way to manage how much storage it’s using would be just dandy.

I honestly see a LOT more posts from people moaning about people going on about Musk or Zuckerberg than actual posts from people going on about either character.

Can anyone recommend a cloud storage service that I can get at least 2 accounts at 1TB each for around £80 annually and which has phone apps for photo backup?

Bonus if accessing and viewing said backed up photos is vaguely competent.

When something went "bang" on a site hosted with GoDaddy that was their fault I was told, eventually, by their couldn't-give-a-💩 "support" team to go swivel.

I dropped @beasts a message with a, on reflection, silly question about getting a site ported over and got a personal, very helpful, friendly answer sent back quickly.

I'm thrilled to be moving a cat rescue site I help with off GoDaddy and onto Mythic Beasts!

Finished the very fun Space Team by Barry J. Hutchinson last night. Was recommended for “fans of Red Dwarf” and I’d say it delivered.

Looking forward to reading more in the series but listening to Adrian Tchaikovsky’s Children of Ruin audiobook has me in the mood for some more “scifi” scifi. Thinking I’ll finally start Peter F. Hamilton’s Judas Unchained.

I attempted to move the car to see if a voyage to the cafe was viable.

Once the car was half a car’s length onto the road it became “beached” on snow.

Mercifully the new snow shovel made light work of digging it out and carefully returning the car to the driveway.

We did not venture on to the cafe.

Got snow shovels today.

Stowed them in the garage. Outside.

I suspect I may come to see the folly in choice of storage location.

Anyone use Lebara mobile? The trust pilot reviews smell a little off, many many with a very similar sort of format and almost all oddly going out of the way to mention support agents’ names..

Deals look good though so keen to hear any real world experiences 😁

Woah woah there.. this is a Bruce Wayne who will compromise his morals..?

I was already fascinated with where this was going and the big changes to the characters we know but this is taking up another level! I’m gripped. Looking forward to the next issue!

Fantastic to see manufacturers competing on what matters rather than pointless specs races most users can’t take advantage of!

Quite the proposition to have a $200 device with 6 years updates. Now make the battery user-serviceable!

“ VPN use in Florida jumped by as much as 1,150 percent within hours of the age verification law coming into force”

It is functionally impossible to “control” any aspect of the internet with legislation. If these zealots wanted actual change and safety they would support massive, well informed, education programs.

But it’s not about the kids or about anyone being safe. It’s about a select few terrified that they don’t have control.

Was considering getting a TV license again but what the hell is this shithousery..????

“ You'll pay for your TV Licence over 6 payments. From then on, you'll pay for your next licences in 12 monthly payments - six before your licence is due to begin and six after.”

Why the %%%k would I pay for 12 months worth in 6 months then be paying 6 months in advance for something I’m not even using yet..??

Think I’ll not bother.
