[#]MadisonWI folks can check out lots of local #music coverage in Tone Madison this week: https://tonemadison.com/articles/madisons-musical-odds-and-ends-of-2024/

warning: I helped on some of the coverage, so mine is goofily sincere... my favorite local record was Loveblaster.

lots to listen to, I missed that Wonderporium record and it's great working tunes: tuba-powered ambient/drone/jazz/etc... will also go well with my upcoming SF TTRPG sessions

revisiting some of my favorite local releases from 2024, like the super fun #jazz album ASTRO put out: https://anderssvanoe.bandcamp.com/album/astro-eclipse-state-of-the-baritone-volume-6

extremely recommended to see these guys live if you get a chance. I only saw them 3 times, and REALLY should have gotten out more since they were playing Cafe Coda at least once a month.

the dual drummer / dual bassist grooves are impeccable, Louka is always incredible on guitar, and the band actually has FUN. the hooks are memorable and hummable, and the way-out conceptual stuff is playful and just full o' heart.

[I signed it despite being a filthy home "owner" (private property is a bad idea to start with but rentiers on top of it = no thanks [imagine if each of these parentheticals was a different entity that got to weigh in on how much your housing cost (except I probably haven't added enough layers to represent reality in American cities yet [I'm so tired])])]

sorry to everyone up in Seattle but sounds like you're hiring our police chief, Shon Barnes... he kept insisting he was here for the long haul but this is the third time in three years he's been a finalist in other cities' top cop searches. :pig_cop:

am reading Joel Whitney - Finks, Lyta Gold - Dangerous Fictions, and Ta-Nehisi Coates - The Message kinda simultaneously, not really planned...

rarely have three books come together to shout in my face a central thing that should have been obvious: fascism's hold over people is based in narrative

also Lyta Gold is a legit hilarious writer, very much recommend that one to all

"You cannot act upon what you cannot see. And we are plagued by dead language and dead stories that serve people whose aim is nothing short of a dead world. And it is not enough to stand against those dissemblers. There has to be something in you, something that hungers for clarity. And you will need that hunger, because if you follow that path, soon enough you will find yourself confronting not just their myths, not just their stories, but your own." - Ta-Nehisi Coates, The Message #writing

two facts about releasing this into the wild:

  1. Distrokid fucking sucks and I need to stop giving them money. my phone broke today and I can't verify my account on there to upload stuff without putting in a phone number. stupid.

  1. this album was mastered using AI. but not bad AI, in my opinion. I think Matchering is a fascinating open source tool that DIY musicians of all kinds should be checking out; it won't replace human mastering, but it will make it possible for us chuckleheads to release music that sounds better. [for the record, each of these songs was mastered "like" a different song on the Mogwai album As the Love Continues]
