Toots for shellsharks@shellsharks.social account

Some of my thoughts on the challenges (and future opportunities / ideas) related to singular #Fediverse identity. Relevant right now as folks create #Pixelfed accounts and wish to be able to port their existing networks/social graphs into that. Or, just for folks who don't want to have to manage so many Fedi-related identities. https://malici.ous.computer/@shellsharks/statuses/01JHQQAFKMSR6GQ70BN2VBT0T4

[#]followfriday! Here's some cool #infosec / #cybersecurity accounts I've discovered recently..

Lastly, I want to "introduce" my newest Fedi presence - @shellsharks@malici.ous.computer. I gave a li’l introduction here (https://malici.ous.computer/@shellsharks/statuses/01JH7B8XE76DYGWD2EN65TYTXS)

TL:DR, I’m trying out GoToSocial and may make that my primary account sometime in the future if I like GTS. So feel free to follow! I'll be posting from there more in the future (and likely boosting from this account)

Have a great weekend!

I need 750k so I can buy the sharks.com domain. Who wants to go in on this with me? I promise to honor you in some fashion on the resulting website...

I did a “2024 wrapped” kinda thingy on my blog. Just a couple of neat stats about the site and a few other bits. I also have a section on stuff I plan to get into this year. A very soft commitment, but still an exercise I tend to do every year.

https://shellsharks.com/captains-log/2025/01/03/log

Not mentioned there, but I’ll say it here. I can see 2025 being the year of the Fediverse. We're going to increasingly need places like this to…

A. escape social AI bots

B. circumvent gov-backed censorship

See ya around! ✌️

The first #infosec / #cybersecurity #followfriday of 2025 is upon us. Check out these awesome accounts I've followed recently!

Also, some cool folks from neat instances ⬇️ (part of my running ”Whimsical corners of the Fediverse" series - https://shellsharks.com/notes/2024/03/29/the-whimsical-corners-of-the-fediverse)

Have a great weekend y'all!

Alrighty! #followfriday is here and it's a good one! Here's some great #infosec / #cybersecurity folks...

Bonus!: Thanks to @anze3db , I've put together (and am still building) my “IndieSec" starter pack for the Fediverse! Check it out here https://fedidevs.com/s/MjQ/

I've published a quick(ish) note all about the new FediDevs “Starter Packs" from @anze3db, a "chronology" of discoverability methods on the Fediverse and some more info on the "IndieSec" Starter Pack.

If you're new to Mastodon/Fedi and looking to bootstrap your feed, the IndieSec pack is a great place to start imo!

So yeah, if you want to follow me (or anyone else from Fedi) on Threads, you need to first find a Threads post (on Threads) that has a federated reply from the person you want to follow, click on that reply and you can follow them from there.

Not at all confusing or inelegant or ridiculous or embarassing. not. at. all.

and by "did it”, I mean so far they've done the barest of minimums here. From what I can tell, this new “advance” has the following limitations

🤦‍♂️

This is an awesome project by @anze3db and is an elegant solution to the starter pack vacuum here on the Fediverse. Well done! 👏

Ok, I scrambled and am getting the v1 of this Fedi-native starter pack out. Here is my “#IndieSec" #starterpack.

https://fedidevs.com/s/MjQ/

It features #infosec / #cybersecurity folks that are active here. No corpo accounts, no bots, no influencers.

I KNOW I've missed people, so ping me if you want to be added. Or just post something as you usually would and Ill probably grab ya. If you want to be removed, ping me. The list maxes at 150 so eventually I'll have to start a sequel pack.

If you wanna see anything non-infosec or non-tech, my "regular" account boosts a ton of #art and #indieweb stuff 😁

I also wonder how/if I can get this "#wrapstodon" feature on this #mastohost instance? ( @mastohost )

For those out there who say Mastodon doesn't have an algo feed, try this out. Turns out it can have one, if the client implements it. Is it a good feed? Well, that might be something to decide for yourself. But it's another option for Fedi and I think it's awesome that there's a vibrant ecosystem of third-party clients trying out cool stuff. https://sns.mszpro.com/@me/113547550592001491

Also, I realize it's no different and arguably even less transparent here on fedi in terms of how to "verify" yourself, but the difference is we don't have celebrities. The ones we do (nerd celebrities) absolutely have their own well-known domains 😆

This is an elegant way to "verify" someone, but only if they have a website and really only if that website is kinda known as being officially associated with that individual. How would this form of verification help like, Brad Pitt? Does he have a website? I feel like most celebrities kinda just don't. Sure, for media orgs or even maybe politicians this might help, but for too many (actors, athletes, etc...), this is a very exclusionary, tech-centric way to verify

I know it's never been as easy, and I know not everyone in our little infosec community that now has a presence on bsky has ever had a presence on Fedi, but I would have loved to see this kind of community building and organizing here at some point in the last 2 years 😓

Guess I need to step up my usual followfriday game... 😄
