[#]WritersCoffeeClub 22Jan—What prompted you to begin writing?
The first time or the current time? In high school I started writing a story over summer break that didn’t go anywhere for over 25 years, till I recently found a printed copy and scanned it, then retyped it to save it. My current journey started as a dare during the most boring, useless new hire training. The dare was who could write the raunchiest story by the end of the month long class. I’ve since toned down to YA

[#]WritersCoffeeClub Jan 16: How would you describe the way you create your stories to a non-writer?
For starters, I couldn’t tell you how my imagination comes up with a scene, but I start with a scene then let it linger in my brain for a couple of days to a couple of weeks. If I can imagine multiple scenes with the same characters I’ll write down the basic premise. Nothing fancy, just a short outline of “this happens, then this happens.” Eventually I’ll start writing the first chapter

[#]WritersCoffeeClub Jan 15: Would you ever hide your politics to avoid alienating some readers?
Short answer: No
Long answer: Still no. If you’re predisposed to be a bigot, racist, homophobe (or any combination) then you aren’t the reader I want anyway. I try to write nuanced characters that care about others, without saying they’re doing it for political reasons. Somehow that’s become political in and of itself

[#]PennedPossibilities 558 — For the writers who only have one WIP: Have you ever started or considered starting a second project?
When I’m working on a project my mind has to be all in on that story. I’m constantly thinking of those characters, what they’re going to say, how they’re going to respond to situations.

[#]WritersCoffeeClub Jan 11. Do you write or imagine a backstory for your secondary characters, or do they pop into existence as required?
I like to think of my characters as real people, complete with how they got to the point where we meet them in the story. I once even gave a secondary character her own book, The Challenges of Being Me

One of the more challenging types of scenes for me to write are crowd scenes. The challenge comes with where to focus the attention and how to have conversations among multiple people. It’s especially challenging now because I’m working with new characters, after spending 2 previous books with a different cast. What aspect of writing do you struggle with? #writingcommunity #authors #authorsofmastodon #author #amwriting @bookstodon

[#]WritersCoffeeClub Jan. 9: Do you borrow settings, plots or characters from other works (without plagiarism)?
I don’t do that consciously, I spend far too long agonizing over what names I should use for my characters and the situations I should put them in. Maybe it would be easier to borrow, but then I wouldn’t feel the work would be my own. Maybe I borrow elements unconsciously, but I never do so willingly.

Update to this #soreribs: One week later and not any better. I’m going to message my doctor through their app with all the symptoms and see if they’d like me to come in

[#]WritersCoffeeClub Jan 6: What’s your current writing project? How’s it going?
My #WIP follows my MC over a 20 year period through alternating chapters. The book starts in the present, the next chapter takes us back to high school. Each flashback chapter won’t go back quite as far, until eventually catching up with the present. Along the way there’s going to be love, hurt, resentment, happiness, hatred, and ambivalence, along with new characters added to the core group of high school friends

[#]WritersCoffeeClub Jan 5 What’s your worst writing month, and why?
What would considered a worst writing month? I’d like to start with that. If that means a month where there aren’t a lot of words added to the page, then I’d say all of them. When I’m not actively writing I’m still thinking about my stories and adding notes that I can use later

[#]WritersCoffeeClub Jan 3. What form do your stories take? Flash, short, novella, novel or other?
I’ve written both novellas and novels. When I write my books typically reach the short novel length. When I’m feeling I want more from the story I’ll start on another installment #writingcommunity

[#]WritersCoffeeClub Jan 2: Have you ever made up something in a story which has come true in real life?
Not that I know of. I did have a worlds colliding moment a few months, though. I set my books in the area I grew up but haven’t lived in for about 20 years. I was driving through one of the villages after visiting family and realized how accurately I captured it. I remember thinking to myself that’s the crosswalk where Lauren runs across the street to see Tyler in my latest book

Yesterday I worked up with sore ribs on my left side. Like a stiff or sore back, but localized to one spot on my ribs. At one point in the middle of the day I questioned actually going to work. Feeling significantly better this morning. Hopefully one more application of muscle cream will do the trick

[#]WritersCoffeeClub Dec 31: What were the big writing moments for you in 2024?
For me it was getting started on my next book. I’m writing a little slower than I have in the past but still proud to have a couple complete chapters in my #WIP
It’s only loosely connected to 2 of my previous books. I haven’t written the chapter yet, but there will be one with a very minor character that has appeared before. Looking forward to when I get there in 2025
